2.4.15.1

Nārada said:

2.4.15.2

The daityas who had previously been conquered by the gods and were living in Pātāla,

2.4.15.3

they too came to the circle of the earth, taking refuge in him without fear.

2.4.15.4

Once, seeing Rāhu with his head cut off, that king of daityas

2.4.15.5

asked Bhārgava there the reason for his head being severed.

2.4.15.6

He told of the churning of the ocean brought about by the gods,

2.4.15.7

and the taking away of the jewels, and the defeat of the daityas.

2.4.15.8

Hearing of the churning of his own father, his eyes red with rage,

2.4.15.9

he dispatched a messenger, Ghasmara, into the presence of Śakra.

2.4.15.10

The messenger went to heaven and entered the excellent Sudharmā assembly hall.

2.4.15.11

With an unbowed head, he spoke astonishing words to the lord of the gods:

2.4.15.12

Ghasmara said:

2.4.15.13

"Jalandhara is the son of the ocean, the lord of all daitya folk.

2.4.15.14

I am a messenger sent by him; hear what he says:

2.4.15.15

'Why was my father, the ocean, churned by you with a mountain?

2.4.15.16

All jewels were carried off; give them back to me at once!'"

2.4.15.17

Hearing these words of the messenger, the lord of the thirty [gods] was astonished.

2.4.15.18

Filled with fear and anger, he addressed the fierce Ghasmara:

2.4.15.19

Indra said:

2.4.15.20

“Listen, messenger, to why the ocean was churned by me in the past.

2.4.15.21

Mountains terrified out of fear of me were placed inside its belly,

2.4.15.22

and other Daityas, who were my enemies, were also protected by it long ago.

2.4.15.23

Therefore, whatever was produced from it was indeed taken away by me.

2.4.15.24

Likewise Śaṅkha, the son of the ocean, previously hated the gods;

2.4.15.25

having entered the belly of the ocean, he was slain by my younger brother.

2.4.15.26

Therefore go and tell him the entire reason for the churning.”

2.4.15.27

Nārada said:

2.4.15.28

Thus dismissed by Indra, the messenger then went to earth.

2.4.15.29

He then reported all of these words to the Daitya.

2.4.15.30

Hearing that, the Daitya, his lip trembling with rage,

2.4.15.31

marched to heaven with the Daitya army to fight.

2.4.15.32

Then, in the battle, a great destruction of gods and Dānavas took place.

2.4.15.33

There in the battle, Bhārgava revived the dead Daityas

2.4.15.34

by means of the lore of reviving the dead, with consecrated drops of water.

2.4.15.35

Likewise, in that battle, Aṅgiras revived the gods

2.4.15.36

by repeatedly bringing divine herbs from Mount Droṇa.

2.4.15.37

Seeing the gods thus risen once again in battle,

2.4.15.38

Jalandhara, overcome with anger, spoke these words to Bhārgava:

2.4.15.39

Jalandhara said:

2.4.15.40

“How do the gods slain by me in battle rise again?

2.4.15.41

It is renowned that the Saṃjīvinī lore is yours and exists nowhere else.”

2.4.15.42

Śukra said:

2.4.15.43

“Bringing divine herbs from Mount Droṇa, Aṅgiras revives the gods.

2.4.15.44

Therefore, carry off Mount Droṇa quickly.”

2.4.15.45

Nārada said:

2.4.15.46

Being thus addressed, that lord of Daityas carried off Mount Droṇa

2.4.15.47

and swiftly threw it into the ocean, and then returned to the great battle.

2.4.15.48

Then, seeing the gods slain, the preceptor went to Mount Droṇa;

2.4.15.49

the one worshipped by the gods did not see the king of mountains there.

2.4.15.50

Knowing Droṇa had been seized by the Daitya, Dhiṣaṇa, overcome with fear,

2.4.15.51

came from afar and spoke, his body agitated by panting:

2.4.15.52

“Flee swiftly, O gods! For he cannot be conquered.

2.4.15.53

He is indeed born from an aspect of Rudra; remember Śakra's deed!”

2.4.15.54

Hearing his words, the gods, then bewildered with fear

2.4.15.55

and being slaughtered by the Daitya, fled in the ten directions.

2.4.15.56

Seeing the gods routed by the Daityas, the son of the ocean

2.4.15.57

entered Amarāvatī amid the sounds of conchs, drums, and cries of victory.

2.4.15.58

When the Daitya entered the city, the gods, with Śakra at their head,

2.4.15.59

tormented by the Daitya, reached a cave in the Golden Mountain and dwelt [there].

2.4.15.60

Then the Asura installed in all the offices of Indra and the others

2.4.15.61

the foremost Daityas such as Śumbha individually, and himself went again to the cave in the Golden Mountain.

2.4.15.62

Thus ends the fifteenth chapter, named “Attainment of Victory by Jalandhara,” in the eulogy of the month of Kārtika in the Vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍa of the glorious Skandamahāpurāṇa, containing eighty-one thousand verses.
