2.9.32.1

Skanda said:

2.9.32.2

Having thus praised that Lord, Nārada then departed from there

2.9.32.3

to the original hermitage of Vyāsa, named Śamyāprāsa, O brahmin. // 1

2.9.32.4

Respectfully honored by him with rising to greet him, offering a seat, and other courtesies,

2.9.32.5

he declared the singular dharma to him, who was eager to know.

2.9.32.6

Then, having gone to the assembly of Brahmā while Brahmā was listening, the sage

2.9.32.7

instructed the gods, ancestors, and great seers present there in that [dharma].

2.9.32.8

And the sun-god, stationed there, again heard this dharma, O sage,

2.9.32.9

in its entirety from Nārada, which had formerly been heard from Nārāyaṇa.

2.9.32.10

He respectfully spoke it to the Vālakhilyas who move in front of him;

2.9.32.11

and on Mount Meru they imparted it to the assembled gods headed by Indra.

2.9.32.12

Having heard this dharma from them, the sage Asita, O best of brahmins,

2.9.32.13

having once gone to the world of the ancestors, recited it to the ancestors.

2.9.32.14

Those ancestors, headed by Aryaman, spoke it to King Śaṃtanu;

2.9.32.15

and he narrated it in truth to Bhīṣma, his own son.

2.9.32.16

He too, at the end of the Bhārata war, when asked by the King of Dharma,

2.9.32.17

spoke it while lying upon the bed of arrows in that great assembly.

2.9.32.18

Having heard it there, Nārada also, present respectfully in that assembly,

2.9.32.19

spoke it on Kailāsa to Śaṃkara, and he [spoke it] to me, O best of sages.

2.9.32.20

It has been related by me to you, O brahmin, as you asked and are devoted to dharma;

2.9.32.21

for my father indeed said to me: 'This must be given to a worthy recipient.'

2.9.32.22

By whomever this māhātmya of the Lord of the Sātvatas was heard,

2.9.32.23

that person developed supreme devotion to him for their own liberation.

2.9.32.24

The royal seer Yudhiṣṭhira as well, having heard the māhātmya of Devakī's son

2.9.32.25

proclaimed by Bhīṣma, rejoiced together with his brothers.

2.9.32.26

Hearing that his own maternal cousin was the cause of all causes,

2.9.32.27

that great-minded king plunged into an ocean of wonder.

2.9.32.28

The king recognized the vyūha manifestations beginning with Vāsudeva

2.9.32.29

and all the incarnations beginning with the Boar as belonging to this very husband of Ramā.

2.9.32.30

Then the king, along with his younger brothers, became exceedingly devoted

2.9.32.31

to Kṛṣṇa in his divine human form, O best of brahmins.

2.9.32.32

And having heard this account, all the divine, royal, and brahmin seers,

2.9.32.33

whoever was present there in that assembly, were also filled with wonder.

2.9.32.34

Knowing Kṛṣṇa in human form to be none other than the supreme Brahman,

2.9.32.35

they attained devotion to him, bowing down to him with reverence.

2.9.32.36

Such is his greatness; therefore you too, O wise one,

2.9.32.37

worship that very Vāsudeva with wholehearted devotion.

2.9.32.38

This greatness of the venerable Vāsudeva has been narrated to you by me;

2.9.32.39

it pacifies evil desires and increases devotion to the Blessed One.

2.9.32.40

Whatever narratives have been related to you by me in this Purāṇa,

2.9.32.41

this, O brahmin, is their essence, extracted by churning alone.

2.9.32.42

This is the essence of the Vedas and Upaniṣads, of Sāṃkhya and Yoga,

2.9.32.43

of the entire Pāñcarātra and the legal codes, O sinless one.

2.9.32.44

This brings fortune, fame, and longevity; it is supremely auspicious,

2.9.32.45

sung directly by the Blessed One, and the destroyer of all misfortunes.

2.9.32.46

Whoever hears this sacred text, recites it, or reads it,

2.9.32.47

their intellect will become unwavering and spotless toward Vāsudeva.

2.9.32.48

And those people will become his single-minded devotees;

2.9.32.49

possessing the nature of Brahman, they go at last to the realm of Brahman, beyond darkness.

2.9.32.50

One who desires dharma obtains dharma through this; a passionate person obtains desire;

2.9.32.51

one who desires wealth gains wealth; one who desires liberation attains supreme liberation.

2.9.32.52

A seeker of learning obtains learning, and a sick person is freed from disease;

2.9.32.53

by merely listening to this, the destruction of all sins takes place.

2.9.32.54

A brahmin attains Vedic splendor, and a kṣatriya attains lordship over men;

2.9.32.55

a vaiśya attains wealth, and a śūdra attains happiness from hearing this.

2.9.32.56

Hearing this before going into battle, a king achieves victory;

2.9.32.57

a woman attains good fortune, and an unmarried maiden attains the husband of her choice.

2.9.32.58

From hearing and reciting this crest-jewel of all sacred treatises,

2.9.32.59

whatever desire a person may desire, that very desire they obtain.

2.9.32.60

Therefore, O best of brahmins, always reciting this with devotion,

2.9.32.61

you should worship him who is affectionate to his devotees with body, speech, and mind.

2.9.32.62

Sauti said:

2.9.32.63

Having drunk this nectar of words issuing from the lotus face of Mahāsena, that Sāvarṇi

2.9.32.64

he devoted himself to the son of Vasudeva, the supreme Brahman in human form, the all-auspicious. (31)

2.9.32.65

And you all, knowers of the Vedas and Āgamas, remaining steadfast in your own duties,

2.9.32.66

worship him alone, the adorable Lord, God of the Brahmins, of exalted renown, the blessed Vāsudeva! (32)

2.9.32.67

Homage be to Vāsudeva, the master of the abode of Goloka, whose form is a mass of light, for the increase of the bliss of devotion! (33)

2.9.32.68

Thus ends the thirty-second chapter, titled "Account of the Transmission of the Tradition of the Text," in the Śrīvāsudevamāhātmya, in the second section, the Vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍa, in the great Skandapurāṇa of eighty-one thousand verses. (32)

2.9.32.69

Thus the Vāsudevamāhātmya in the second section, the Vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍa, of the great Skandapurāṇa is complete. (2.9)

2.9.32.70

Thus the second section, the Vaiṣṇavakhaṇḍa, in the great Skandapurāṇa is complete. (2)
