5.6.1

Sūta said:
Having heard those words of Triśaṅku, the eminent sage
Viśvāmitra, feeling somewhat ashamed, spoke these words:

5.6.2

“Do not despair, O ruler of the earth, regarding this matter.
I shall bring you to heaven in this very body.

5.6.3

I will perform every necessary rite for the sake of heaven, O best of kings;
I will accomplish your desire, or else I shall perish.”

5.6.4

Having spoken thus, displaying great anger against the dwellers of heaven,
he then spoke terrible words in the presence of that king:

5.6.5

“Just as brahminhood was indeed acquired by me myself through my own power,
so shall I produce my own creation; of this there is no doubt.”

5.6.6

Then, having beheld Śaṃkara, who bears the crescent moon on his crest,
the great sage bowed down according to rule with devotion and offered praise.

5.6.7

Viśvāmitra said:
“Victory, O God! Victory, O Inconceivable One! Victory, O beloved of Pārvatī!
Victory, O Kṛṣṇa, Lord of the Universe! Victory, O Kṛṣṇa, Guru of the World!

5.6.8

Victory, O Inconceivable One! Victory, O Immeasurable One! Victory, O Endless One! Victory, O Infallible One!
Victory, O Immortal One! Victory, O Unconquerable One! Victory, O Imperishable One, Lord of the Gods!

5.6.9

Victory, O All-pervading One, Lord of All! Victory, O Refuge of All Gods!
Victory, O Goal of Meditation for All People! Victory, O Destroyer of All Sins!

5.6.10

You are the Creator and the Ordainer; you are the Maker and the Protector
of the fourfold realm of living beings, O Lord of Gods, O Śaṃkara.

5.6.11

Just as oil resides in sesame seeds, just as clarified butter resides in curds,
even so the entire universe is pervaded by you, concealed within it.

5.6.12

You are Brahmā, you are Hṛṣīkeśa, you are Indra, you are the Fire;
you are the sacrifice, you are the vaṣaṭ-call, you are the moon, you are the sun.

5.6.13

Or rather, what is the use of a lengthy hymn of praise for you, O Lord?
In brief alone shall I declare your manifestation as taught in the revealed scripture.

5.6.14

Whatever there is in the three worlds, stationary or moving, O All-pervading One,
all that is pervaded by you, as wood is by the consumer of oblations.”

5.6.15

The Blessed Lord said:
“I am well pleased, may it be well with you! Request a boon, O good sage;
whatever is constantly held in your heart, I shall grant it all without doubt.”

5.6.16

Viśvāmitra said:
“If you are pleased, O Lord of Gods, if a boon is to be given to me,
then may the power of creation be mine by your grace, O Maheśvara!”

5.6.17

Saying to him, “So be it,” the blessed lord whose banner bears the bull, / accompanied by all his attendants, then vanished from sight.

5.6.18

Viśvāmitra too, remaining right there, devoted to meditation, / fashioned the fourfold creation in rivalry with [Brahmā] whose vehicle is a swan.

5.6.18_1

Thus ends the sixth chapter, named “Attainment of the Boon by Viśvāmitra,” in the story of Triśaṅku in the māhātmya of the sacred field of Hāṭakeśvara, in the sixth Nāgarakhaṇḍa of the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa, a collection of eighty-one thousand [verses].
