5.68.1

Sūta said: / Then those Śabaras carefully carried that blood born from the Haihaya / to where that pit dug for the father was situated.

5.68.2

And the descendant of Bhṛgu, having slain him and taken all the blood, / then dispatched it to where the paternal pit was.

5.68.3

That descendant of Bhṛgu spared neither child nor old man, / nor one in the prime of youth, nor even a kṣatriya still in the womb.

5.68.4

He personally slew the kings and others beside them, / and enraged, he caused them to be destroyed on all sides by his soldiers.

5.68.5

In the same manner he collected their blood, carefully made others collect it, / and through those at his side quickly had it sent there.

5.68.6

Having thus made the entire earth devoid of kṣatriyas, that scion of Bhṛgu / went immediately thereafter to the sacred field born of Hāṭakeśvara.

5.68.7

Then, having bathed in that blood and taken many sesame seeds, / placing [his sacred thread] over the right shoulder, he performed the tarpaṇa for the ancestors.

5.68.8

Before the eyes of all the brahmins as well as the other ascetics, / having fulfilled his vow, he became free from grief.

5.68.9

Then, when the world was cleared of kṣatriyas, he performed a horse sacrifice / and granted the entire earth to the brahmins as their sacrificial fee.

5.68.10

Then the brahmins, having obtained the boons, said to that best of the Bhṛgus: / 'You must not remain on our land, for a king is traditionally considered singular.'

5.68.10_1

Saying 'Very well,' he, filled with great joy, / approached the edge of the earth and spoke to the lord of rivers [the Ocean]. / Stringing his mighty bow and fitting the fire weapon, / he knitted his brows into three furrows, filled with great wrath.

5.68.10_2

Rāma said: / 'I have made the earth, with its mountains and forests, devoid of kṣatriyas / and then given it to the brahmins in the great horse sacrifice.

5.68.14

Therefore, make way yourself and give me a place. / For having given the earth to the brahmins, I will not take it back again.

5.68.15

If you do not obey my command today, O lord of rivers, / I will dry you up with the fire weapon and turn you into dry land.'

5.68.16

Sūta said: / Hearing his words, the Ocean, agitated with fear, / thereupon withdrew as far as he desired.

5.68.16_3

Then that scion of Bhṛgu took up residence right there, / engaged in austerity and remembering the slaying of his father.

5.68.16_4

Then that descendant of Bhṛgu settled all the Pulindas / and the Śabaras together with the Medas at the edge of the land, on the mountains.

5.68.68

Thus ends the sixty-eighth chapter, entitled 'The Description of the Ocean's Retreat Preceded by the Gift of the Earth by Paraśurāma', in the māhātmya of the Hāṭakeśvara sacred field, in the Nāgarakhaṇḍa, the sixth [part] of the auspicious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses.
