Chapter 154

6.3.154.1

Śrī Mārkaṇḍeya said: / "On the southern bank of the Narmadā is the Kalakaleśvara sacred ford, / renowned in all the worlds, fashioned by the God himself.

6.3.154.2

Having slain Andhaka in battle, the great Lord, the god of gods, / accompanied by gods, gandharvas, kinnaras, and great serpents,

6.3.154.3

amidst the blasts of conches and trumpets, with mṛdaṅgas, paṇavas, and other drums, / with the sounds of vīṇās and flutes, and with abundant hymns of praise,

6.3.154.4

some singing the Sāman hymns, others the Yajus hymns, others reciting the metres and the Ṛg verses, / while other exalted ones praised Maheśvara there with manifold hymns—

6.3.154.5

because the liṅga was established amidst the roaring of the Pramathas / and the tumultuous acclaim of the bards, it came to be known by that name.

6.3.154.6

Whoever, having bathed at that sacred ford, beholds Kalakaleśvara, / that human being on earth attains merit superior to that of a Vājapeya sacrifice.

6.3.154.7

Purified in self by that merit, upon relinquishing his breath he goes to heaven, / having mounted an excellent aerial vehicle, sung of by hosts of apsarases.

6.3.154.8

Having enjoyed immense delights there for a long time, / that great-souled one is subsequently born into a pure family in the mortal world.

6.3.154.9

A fortunate brahmin in the world, a master of the Vedas and the Vedāṅgas, / freed from disease and grief, he lives for a hundred autumns."

6.3.154.9_2

Thus ends the one hundred fifty-fourth chapter, entitled "Description of the Fruit and Māhātmya of the Kalakaleśvara Sacred Ford," in the Revākhaṇḍa of the fifth section, the Āvantyakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa, a compilation of eighty-one thousand verses.
