Chapter 30

6.3.30.1

The venerable Mārkaṇḍeya said:
On the northern bank of the Narmadā is Dārutīrtha, unsurpassed,
where, having performed austerity, an excellent twice-born attained perfection, O fortunate one.

6.3.30.2

Yudhiṣṭhira said:
Who was that best of excellent twice-born that attained perfection there, O great sage?
Whose son was Dāruka? You ought to tell me this.

6.3.30.3

The venerable Mārkaṇḍeya said:
In the vast lineage of Bhṛgu, [born] to the wise Devaśarman,
was the fortunate one named Dāru, a master of the Vedas and Vedāṅgas.

6.3.30.4

As a celibate student, householder, and forest dweller in proper order,
and according to the rule of the ascetic's way of life, he performed immense austerity.

6.3.30.5

Meditating on Mahādeva, fasting, O Yudhiṣṭhira,
he lived at that sacred ford until the exhaustion of his vital breaths.

6.3.30.6

By his name that sacred ford became renowned throughout the three worlds.
Having bathed there according to rule, one should worship the ancestors and the deities.

6.3.30.7

Speaking the truth, having subdued anger, devoted to the welfare of all beings,
one attains all desires right here in every way, O king.

6.3.30.8

He who observes fasting, intent on truth and purity,
the fruit of the Sautrāmaṇī sacrifice undoubtedly accrues to him.

6.3.30.9

One who recites the Ṛgveda, knowing the Ṛgveda, or a master of the Sāmaveda with the Sāmans,
or a knower of the Yajurveda having recited the Yajus, obtains supreme fruit.

6.3.30.10

A mortal who gives up his vital breaths at that sacred ford according to rule
attains a state from which there is no return; thus Śaṃkara has said.

6.3.30.10_2

Thus ends the thirtieth chapter, titled 'Description of the Glory of Dārutīrtha', in the Section on the Revā, in the fifth Section on Avantī, in the Mahāpurāṇa composed by Skanda, in the collection of eighty-one thousand [verses].
