Chapter 69

6.3.69.1

Śrī Mārkaṇḍeya said:
Then one should go, O best of kings, to the excellent Maṅgaleśvara,
installed by the son of the earth out of desire for the welfare of the worlds.

6.3.69.2

Śaṅkara, who bears the crescent moon on his crest, was pleased through supreme devotion.
On the fourteenth day, the guru, the lord, Maṅgaleśvara became visible [and said]:

6.3.69.3

"Speak, O son, an auspicious boon; that I shall give to you, O Maṅgala."

6.3.69.4

Maṅgala said:
"Be gracious to me, O Śambhu, birth after birth, O Śaṅkara!
Born of the sweat of your body, I dwell among the planets.

6.3.69.5

By your grace, O Īśāna, I am worshipful to all deities.
Indeed, today I have achieved my goal from seeing and speaking with you.

6.3.69.6

[May] Maheśvara [dwell] in this place by my name, O Lord of the gods of gods!"
Saying, "So be it for you, O son," he then disappeared.

6.3.69.7

The noble Maṅgala, having installed Maheśvara,
then worshipped the bearer of the trident by the power of his own yoga.

6.3.69.8

The liṅga, named indeed Maṅgaleśvara, removes all sorrow.
At that sacred ford, O king, the wise man should gratify brahmins

6.3.69.9

along with their wives, O best of kings, during the vow on a Tuesday fourth [tithi],
to a learned, Vedic scholar brahmin accompanied by his wife and husband.

6.3.69.10

And at the end of the vow, a cow along with draft oxen is given dedicated to Śiva:
"May Mahādeva, whose emblem is the bull, be pleased along with his consort!"

6.3.69.11

A pair of red garments should be given, O son of Pāṇḍu,
and two draft oxen that are red-colored, or white or black as well.

6.3.69.12

An umbrella, an auspicious bed, and red garlands and ointments
should be given, O best of Pāṇḍavas, with a purified inner soul.

6.3.69.13

On the fourth as well as on the eighth day of both fortnights, bright and dark,
a śrāddha should be performed right there, free from dishonesty regarding wealth.

6.3.69.14

The deceased spirits remain well-pleased for an entire yuga, O lord of the earth;
the mortal is born with sons in every birth, O best of kings.

6.3.69.15

Through the power of that sacred ford, O king, with all limbs handsome,
his lineage becomes auspicious, and inauspiciousness is never found anywhere.

6.3.69.16

Whoever constantly recites [this] with devotion, his sin is dispelled.

6.3.69.16_2

Thus ends the sixty-ninth chapter, entitled "The Description of the Greatness of Maṅgaleśvaratīrtha," in the Revākhaṇḍa of the fifth section, the Āvantyakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skandapurāṇa, a collection of eighty-one thousand [verses].
