Chapter 77

6.3.77.1

The venerable Mārkaṇḍeya said:
Then one should go to Bhīmeśvara, which destroys all sin,
resorted to by hosts of seers, auspicious practitioners of fierce vows.

6.3.77.2

At that sacred ford, having bathed, fasting and with senses subdued,
raising one's arms toward the sun, one should mutter the single-syllable mantra.

6.3.77.3

The sin accumulated in his [present] life is destroyed that very instant. / The sin accumulated in seven lives is surely destroyed by the Gāyatrī.

6.3.77.4

With ten [recitations] the sin incurred in ten lives is removed; with a hundred, that which was done long ago; / with a thousand, the Gāyatrī destroys the sin arising from three births.

6.3.77.5

Whatever Vedic or worldly recitation is chanted, O lord of men, / at that moment burns all [sins], just as fire [burns] straw.

6.3.77.6

One should never commit a sin relying upon the power of a deity. / A [sin committed] through ignorance is destroyed quickly, but never one committed subsequently [with deliberation].

6.3.77.7

And whatever gift one gives at that sacred ford according to one's capacity, / all of that yields imperishable fruit, O son of Pāṇḍu.

6.3.77.7_2

Thus ends the seventy-seventh chapter, entitled 'Description of the Māhātmya of Bhīmeśvara Tīrtha', in the Revākhaṇḍa of the fifth [section], the Āvantyakhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa, a compendium of eighty-one thousand [verses].
