Homage to glorious Gaṇeśa!

yatra devagaṇairyukto vakratuṇḍaḥ pratāpavān ||
Mudgala said:
Those Daityas, engaged in wandering, arrived near Ḍhuṇḍhi,
where the majestic Vakratuṇḍa was, surrounded by hosts of gods.
1.34.2
dṛṣṭvā taṃ vakratuṇḍaṃ te bhayabhītāstadā'bhavan |
mahākāyaṃ mahāvīryaṃ naranāgasvarūpiṇam ||
Seeing that Vakratuṇḍa, they then became terrified with fear—

surrounded by various heroes equal to the fire of universal dissolution,
praised by the gods filled with joy and steeped in devotion.
1.34.4
manasā daityapāḥ sarve menire mṛtyumātmanaḥ |
satyākāśabhavā vāṇī so'yaṃ vakrānano bhavet ||
In their minds, all the Daitya chiefs considered their own death:
“True was the voice originating from the sky; this must be that curved-faced one!
1.34.5
vakratuṇḍa jaya tvaṃ vai jaya tvaṃ jaya sarvadā |
devaiḥ prakathyate tasmādvakratuṇḍo'yamāgataḥ ||
‘O Vakratuṇḍa, be victorious, be victorious, be ever victorious!’
is proclaimed by the gods; therefore, this Vakratuṇḍa has arrived.
1.34.6
yadi yuddhaṃ kariṣyāmo'nena sārdhaṃ mahādbhutam |
yuddhe vayaṃ mṛtāścedvā vṛttāntaṃ ko nivedayet ||
If we fight a greatly wondrous battle with him,
and if we die in the battle, who will report the news?
1.34.7
ato matsaradaityeśaṃ gamiṣyāmo javānvitāḥ |
evaṃ niścayayuktāste matsaraṃ jagmurādarāt ||
Therefore, we will go swiftly to Matsara, lord of the Daityas.”
Having thus resolved, they respectfully went to Matsara.
1.34.8
sa devo vakratuṇḍastu dūrataḥ pañcayojanam |
īrṣyāpūraṃ parityajya sthitaḥ kṛtvā sabhāṃ prabhuḥ ||
That divine Vakratuṇḍa, however, five yojanas away,
having halted outside the city of Īrṣyā, the Lord remained, having formed an assembly.
1.34.9
daityāste matsaraṃ gatvā vṛttāntaṃ taṃ nyavedayan |
bhorājan satyamevedaṃ vacanaṃ khasamudbhavam ||
Those Daityas, going to Matsara, reported that account:
“O King, this utterance that arose from the sky is indeed true!
1.34.10
narakuñjararūpeṇa dṛṣṭo vakrānanaḥ prabhuḥ |
devaiḥ samāvṛto bhūpa vicāraṃ kuru sarvathā ||
The curved-faced Lord was seen having the form of man and elephant,
surrounded by the gods, O King! Deliberate by all means!”
1.34.11
teṣāṃ vacanamākarṇya matsaraścintayānvitaḥ |
babhūva mlānatuṇḍaśca jñātvā śatruṃ mahābalam ||
Hearing their words, Matsara became filled with anxiety,
and his face fell, knowing the enemy to be exceedingly powerful.
1.34.12
tataḥ krodhasamāviṣṭastaṃ hantuṃ kṛtavān manaḥ |
ājñāpayat sa daityendrān sajjitā bho bhavantviti ||
Then, overcome with anger, he resolved in his mind to kill him; / he ordered the Daitya chiefs: "O, be ready!"

harṣeṇa mahatā yuktā devamardanalālasāḥ ||
At his mere command, the Daitya lords assembled in armor, / filled with great joy and eager to crush the gods.
1.34.15

tanmadhye matsaro vīraḥ śuśubhe rathasaṅgataḥ ||
A vast fourfold army marched out of the city; / in its midst, the heroic Matsara shone, mounted upon a chariot.
1.34.16
āgatāste tvarābhājo vakratuṇḍaḥ sthito yataḥ |
tān dṛṣṭvā devasaṅghāstaṃ śaśaṃsurgaṇanāyakam ||
Moving with haste, they arrived where Vakratuṇḍa was stationed. / Seeing them, the hosts of gods praised that leader of the gaṇas:
1.34.17
svāmin samāgato daityaḥ svayameva mahāprabho |
yatkariṣyasi devastvaṃ tvarayā tat kuru prabho ||
"O Lord, the Daitya himself has come, O great Lord! / Whatever you intend to do, O God, do it quickly, O Lord!
1.34.18
asmānnocecca daiteyā haniṣyanti mahābalāḥ |
maraṇaṃ prāptamasmābhiḥ kutra sthātuṃ na śakyate ||
Otherwise, the mighty Daityas will slay us; / death has reached us; we are unable to stay anywhere."
1.34.19
devānāṃ vakratuṇḍaśca śrutvā vacanamādarāt |
uvāca vismito bhūtvā mā bhayaṃ kuruta priyāḥ ||
Hearing the words of the gods with respect, / Vakratuṇḍa was amazed and said: "Have no fear, beloved ones!
1.34.20
sa daityaṃ matsaraṃ devā haniṣyāmi na saṃśayaḥ |
paśyantu kautukaṃ yuddhe madīyaṃ paramādbhutam ||
I will slay that Daitya Matsara, O gods, without a doubt; / behold my most wonderful spectacle in battle!"
1.34.21
ityuktvā vakratuṇḍaḥ sa siṃhārūḍho'bhavatprabhuḥ |
pāśāṅkuśakaro garjanmeghanādasamasvanaḥ ||
Having spoken thus, the Lord Vakratuṇḍa mounted a lion, / holding a noose and a goad in his hands, roaring with a sound like a thunderclap.
1.34.22
tasya śabdena santrastaṃ trailokyaṃ sacarācaram |
bhayabhītā daityagaṇā babhūvuśca prajāpate ||
At his roar, the three worlds, moving and unmoving, were terrified, / and the Daitya hosts became stricken with fear, O lord of creatures.

mudgaraiśca mahāvīrā mārayāmāsurojasā |
mallayuddhaṃ pare cakrurnādayanto diśo daśa ||

1.34.33
sainyasya rajasā sarvaṃ vyāptamāsīd digantaram |
nābhūt svaparabodho'pi purogān jaghnire tadā ||
The space between the directions was completely covered with the army's dust; / there was no awareness of friend or foe, and they struck down those in front of them.

śastraiḥ śastrāṇi saṃvārya tathāstrairastrasañcayam |
bāṇairbāṇān samāruṣṭāścicchiduste parasparam ||

na jayaṃ prāpnuyurdevā daityācā'pi prajāpate ||
