tadā tena puro dṛṣṭo hyajaḥ paramaśobhitaḥ |
taṃ hatvā tacchirastatra samānītaṃ ca bhṛṅgiṇā ||
Then an exceedingly handsome goat was seen in front of him; / having killed it, its head was brought there by Bhṛṅgin.
1.4.89
tadeva yojayitvā tamajīvayata śaṅkaraḥ |
sa sadya utthitastatra dakṣo'jamukhatāṃ gataḥ ||
Having joined it, Śaṅkara revived him; / Dakṣa immediately arose there, possessing the face of a goat.
1.4.90
brahmaṇā prerito dakṣaḥ punastuṣṭāva śaṅkaram |
gatamāno mahābāhuḥ bhaktyā sarveśvaraṃ tataḥ ||
Urged by Brahmā, the mighty-armed Dakṣa, his pride gone, / then praised Śaṅkara, the Lord of all, with devotion.
1.4.91
khaṃ. 1 a. 4 pāna 12) dakṣa uvāca |
namāmi śaṅkara sākṣādyadādhāramidaṃ jagat |
kālarūpaṃ yathākālaṃ bodhayāmāsa taṃ śivam ||
(Section 1, Chapter 4, Page 12) Dakṣa said: / "I bow to you, O Śaṅkara, the manifest foundation on which this world rests." / He addressed that Śiva as time itself, in accordance with time:
1.4.92
kālena phalamūlāni jāyante'nnādikāni ca |
śītoṣṇasamabhāvaśca sadā kālena jāyate ||
"Through time fruits, roots, grains, and so forth are born, / and the equilibrium of cold and heat always arises through time.
1.4.93
sūryastapati kālena jyotiṣāṃ gaṇa eva ca |
kālena jāyate vṛṣṭiranāvṛṣṭistathā vibho ||
Through time the sun shines, and the host of luminaries as well; / through time rain occurs, and likewise drought, O omnipresent Lord.
1.4.94
kālena sṛjyate sṛṣṭirbrahmaṇā vai punaḥ punaḥ |
kālena pālanaṃ tatra kurute viṣṇuravyayaḥ ||
Through time the universe is created by Brahmā again and again; / through time the imperishable Viṣṇu carries out preservation.
1.4.95
kālena svecchayā śambhuḥ saṃhāraṃ prakaroti ca |
yatkiñcidiha tatsarvaṃ kālādhīnaṃ na saṃśayaḥ ||
Through time Śambhu carries out destruction by his own will; / whatever there is here, it is all subject to time, without doubt.
1.4.96
sa eva kālo bhagavānīśvaro brahmasaṃjñitaḥ |
śivaḥ sākṣācca vedeṣu kathyate vedavādibhiḥ ||
That very time is the Blessed Lord, the ruler designated as Brahman, / and Śiva manifest in the Vedas, as spoken by the teachers of the Veda.
1.4.97
kṣamasva me'parādhaṃ tvaṃ tvanmāyāgarvitasya ca |
yatkṛtaṃ taddayāsindho namaste parameśvara ||
Forgive my offense, one who was arrogant through your māyā; / forgive whatever was done, O ocean of mercy! Salutations to you, O Parameśvara!
1.4.98
saguṇāya namastubhyaṃ nirguṇāya namo namaḥ |
sṛṣṭikartre ca saṃhartre pātre nānāsvarūpiṇe ||
Salutations to you with attributes, salutations, salutations to you without attributes! / To the creator, destroyer, and protector, whose forms are manifold!
1.4.99
anantaguṇarāśistvaṃ varṇanīyaṃ kimapyaho |
nāntaṃ brahmādayo jagmurmādṛśānāṃ ca kā kathā ||
You are an infinite heap of virtues; ah, what can possibly be described? / Brahmā and the others have not reached the end [of them], so what to say of people like me?
1.4.100
namo namo brahmamayāya devādaye śivāyātha ca pūrṇamūrte |
anādimadhyāntavihīna bhūmne namo namo bhaktabhayāpahantre ||
Salutations, salutations to the one consisting of Brahman, the primal God, Śiva, of complete form; / to the infinite one devoid of beginning, middle, and end; salutations, salutations to the destroyer of fear of devotees!"
1.4.101
ityevaṃ stuvatastatra premagadgadayā girā |
ajavattasya sañjātaṃ bhāṣaṇaṃ lalalallalam ||
As he was thus praising there with a voice choked with love, / his speech became like that of a goat, stuttering 'la-la-lal-la-lam.'
1.4.102
tena hṛṣṭo mahādevastaṃ punarnaramastakam |
bhagavān kārayāmāsa yathāpūrvaṃ munīśvarāḥ ||
Delighted by that, O great sages, the Blessed Lord, Mahādeva, / caused him to have a human head again as before.
1.4.103
provāca madhuraṃ vākyaṃ śivastaṃ sarvasannidhau |
prajāpatipatirdakṣa sarvamānyo bhaviṣyasi ||
Śiva spoke sweet words to him in the presence of all: / 'Dakṣa, lord of Prajāpatis, you shall be honored by all.'
1.4.104
tvayā yadracitaṃ stotraṃ madīyaṃ matpriyaṃ bhavet |
yastoṣyati pradāsyāmi tasmai kāmamanena mām ||
The hymn of praise composed by you concerning me will be dear to me. / Whoever praises me with this, to him I will grant his desire.
1.4.105
iha bhuktvā'khilānbhogānante mallokamāpnuyāt |
mama prītikaraścāsau bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ ||
Having enjoyed all pleasures here, he will reach my realm at the end; / and he will bring delight to me; of this there is no doubt.
1.4.106
tvayā yadajavadvākyaṃ kṛtaṃ me khalu sannidhau |
tadvadyo matsamīpe vai kariṣyati naraḥ sakṛt ||
Indeed, the goat-like sound that you made in my presence— / similarly, whatever man makes it once near me,
1.4.107
tena hṛṣṭo bhaviṣyāmi vāñchitaṃ pūrayāmi ca |
evaṃ dattvā varaṃ śambhustatraivāntaradhīyata ||
I shall be delighted with him and shall fulfill his desire.' / Having thus given a boon, Śambhu disappeared right there.
1.4.108
sarve svasvasthalaṃ jagmurharṣitā dharṣitāstathā |
dakṣaśca svagṛhe viprā duḥkhitaḥ sthitavān svayam ||
All returned to their respective places, delighted and subdued; / and Dakṣa, O brahmins, remained in his own home, sorrowful in himself.
1.4.109
tadādi śivabhaktā ye te kurvanti śivālaye |
ajavanninadaṃ tena hṛṣṭo bhavati śaṅkaraḥ ||
Since that time, devotees of Śiva make / a goat-like sound in the temple of Śiva; Śaṅkara is delighted thereby.
1.4.110
