3.27.p1
śrīgaṇeśāya namaḥ ||
Homage to the holy Gaṇeśa.
3.27.1
naranārāyaṇavūcatuḥ |
ityādi rājamāhātmyaṃ vaktuṃ naiva praśakyate |
sarvaṃ māyāmayaṃ viddhi mārkaṇḍeya viśeṣataḥ ||
Nara and Nārāyaṇa said:
Such greatness of kings cannot indeed be fully spoken;
know everything to consist of illusion, O Mārkaṇḍeya, in particular.
3.27.2
brahmaṇā sṛṣṭamāpūrṇaṃ viṣṇunā pālitaṃ tathā |
hareṇa saṃhṛtaṃ sarvaṃ brahmāṇḍaṃ māyayā kṛtam ||
The entire cosmic egg was created fully by Brahmā, preserved by Viṣṇu,
and dissolved by Hara—made entirely through illusion.
3.27.3
anantāni ca sarvatra brahmāṇḍāni sthitāni vai |
mahākāraṇarūpeṇa sandhṛtā viddhi mānada ||
Endless cosmic eggs abide everywhere;
know, O giver of honor, that they are sustained in the form of the great causal principle.
3.27.4
māyātmakāni sarvāṇi jñātavyāni viśeṣataḥ |
bhramanāśena yogena jñāyante nātra saṃśayaḥ ||
All things must be known to consist of illusion;
they are known by yoga through the destruction of error—of this there is no doubt.
3.27.5
manovāṇīmayaṃ sarvaṃ bhramarūpaṃ prakathyate |
manovāṇīvihīnaṃ vai tadevaṃ tādṛśaṃ matam ||
All that consists of mind and speech is declared to be of the nature of error;
that which is devoid of mind and speech is considered to be truly such [as it is].
3.27.6
dharmārthakāmamokṣāśca brahmabhūtatvameva ca |
bhrameṇa māyayā vipra bhāsate yogināṃ hṛdi ||
Dharma, wealth, pleasure, and liberation, and even the state of becoming Brahman,
appear in the heart of yogins through error, through illusion, O brahmin.
3.27.7
rāmasya caritaṃ pūrṇaṃ kathitaṃ te samāsataḥ |
kiṃ śrotumicchasi prājña gamiṣyāvo nijāśramam ||
The story of Rāma has been told to you in full, in brief;
what do you wish to hear, O wise one? We two shall return to our hermitage.
3.27.7.p1
bhānuruvāca |
tayorvacanamākarṇya mārkaṇḍeyaśca tau punaḥ |
(
Bhānu said:
Having heard their words, Mārkaṇḍeya again spoke to the two of them,
[
3.27.8
khaṃ. 3 a. 27 pāna 57) jagāda praṇato bhūtvā yogārthaṃ pūrṇabhāvataḥ ||
having bowed down with complete devotion, for the sake of yoga.
3.27.9
mārkaṇḍeya uvāca |
naranārāyaṇau devau bhavadbhyāṃ pāvito'hyaham |
kathāṃ śrutvā na me tṛptirjāyate'mṛtapānavat ||
Mārkaṇḍeya said:
O gods Nara and Nārāyaṇa, I have indeed been purified by you two;
hearing the story, my satisfaction does not end, like drinking nectar.
3.27.10
ato gaṇeśayogaṃ me vadataṃ yena cāpyaham |
rāmavacchāntimāśritya brahmabhūto bhavāmi ca ||
Therefore, tell me the yoga of Gaṇeśa, by which I too,
taking refuge in peace like Rāma, may become one with Brahman.
3.27.11
naranārāyaṇāvūcatuḥ |
gaṇeśayogamārgaṃ te vadiṣyāvaḥ suyuktitaḥ |
na śaktistaṃ varṇayituṃ manasā'pi munīśvara ||
Nara and Nārāyaṇa said:
We two will explain the path of Gaṇeśa's yoga to you with proper reasoning;
there is no power to describe it even with the mind, O lord of sages.
3.27.12
cittaṃ pañcavidhaṃ vipra tatra cintāmaṇiḥ sthitaḥ |
pañcavṛttinirodhena labhyate nātra saṃśayaḥ ||
The mind is fivefold, O brahmin; Cintāmaṇi resides in it;
by restraining the five modifications, he is attained—of this there is no doubt.
3.27.13
bhrāntidā sarvabhāveṣu siddhiḥ sarvatra saṃsthitā |
bhrāntidhārakarūpā vai buddhiḥ sā kathyate budhaiḥ ||
Perfection, bestowing delusion in all states, is present everywhere;
intellect is indeed declared by the wise to have the nature of supporting delusion.
3.27.14
tayorbimbaṃ ca yat proktaṃ tadeva gaṇanāyakaḥ |
mohayuktaḥ svabhāvena khelate munisattama ||
And that which is called the reflected image of both is the leader of the gaṇas;
joined with delusion, he sports by his own nature, O best of sages.
3.27.15
bimbibhāvaṃ parityajya bhava tvaṃ gaṇanāyakaḥ |
ahaṃ gaṇeśarūpaśca yogo'yaṃ śāntidāyakaḥ ||
Casting aside the condition of being a reflected image, become the leader of the gaṇas;
'I am of the form of Gaṇeśa'—this yoga bestows peace.
3.27.16
cittaṃ pañcavidhaṃ tyaktvā tadaiśvaryaṃ bhramātmakam |
adhunā gaṇanātho vai tvaṃ yogena bhaviṣyasi ||
Abandoning the fivefold mind and its illusory sovereignty,
you will now become the leader of the gaṇas through yoga.
3.27.17
manovāṇīmayaṃ sarvaṃ gakārākṣaravācakam |
manovāṇī vihīnaṃ ca ṇakāraḥ kathyate budhaiḥ ||
All that consists of mind and speech is expressed by the syllable 'ga';
and that which is devoid of mind and speech is declared by the wise to be the syllable 'ṇa'.
3.27.18
tayoḥ svāmī gaṇeśāno vede paśya mahāmune |
taṃ bhajasva tataḥ śāntiṃ gacchasi tvaṃ na saṃśayaḥ ||
Behold in the Veda Gaṇeśa as the master of the two, O great sage;
worship him; then you will go to peace, without a doubt.
3.27.19
evamuktvā vālakhilyā naranārāyaṇāvṛṣī |
virematurathaivaṃ taṃ jānīta gaṇanāyakam ||
Having spoken thus, O Vālakhilyas, the two ṛṣis Nara and Nārāyaṇa
ceased; understand that leader of the gaṇas in this way.
3.27.20
tau praṇamya punaḥ prāha mārkaṇḍeyaḥ pratāpavān |
dhanyo'haṃ bhavatoścaiva darśanena mahāmunī ||
Having bowed to the two, the glorious Mārkaṇḍeya spoke again:
'Blessed am I by the sight of you two, O great sages.
3.27.21
māyāṃ mohakarīṃ nāthau draṣṭumicchāmi śāśvatīm |
darśayetaṃ mahāmāyāṃ bhagavantau namāmyaham ||
O masters, I desire to see eternal illusion, which creates delusion;
show me that Mahāmāyā, O venerable ones, I bow to you.'
3.27.22
bhānuruvāca |
tatheti taṃ vālakhilyā ūcaturmunisattamau |
paśyasi tvaṃ mahāmāyāṃ mārkaṇḍeya na saṃśayaḥ ||
Bhānu said:
Saying 'So be it' to him, O Vālakhilyas, the two best of sages said:
'You will see Mahāmāyā, Mārkaṇḍeya, without a doubt.'
3.27.23
ājñāṃ pragṛhya tenaiva pūjitau yogināṃ varau |
yayatuḥ svāśramaṃ yogādgāṇapatyau maharṣayaḥ ||
Receiving permission and worshipped by him, the two best of yogins,
the Gāṇapatya great ṛṣis, went to their hermitage through yoga.
3.27.24
tataḥ kadācidviprendro mārkaṇḍeyaḥ sva āśrame |
saṃsthito yoginau dhyātvā māyādarśanalālasaḥ ||
Then once, the eminent brahmin Mārkaṇḍeya, staying in his hermitage,
meditated upon the two yogins, longing for a vision of illusion.
3.27.25
tato'kasmāt praśuśrāva mahānādaṃ samudbhavam |
bhayabhrānto'bhavat so'pi tato meghā jagarjire ||
Then suddenly he heard a great noise arising from the ocean. / He too became bewildered by fear; then the clouds thundered.
3.27.26
hastihastopamābhiste dhārābhirvavṛṣustataḥ |
meghaistatra jagat sarvaṃ majjitaṃ paśyato muneḥ ||
Then they rained down with torrents resembling elephant trunks; / as the sage watched, the entire world was submerged there by the clouds.
3.27.27
tataḥ samudrajenaiva jalena plāvitaṃ mahat |
sarvaṃ carācaraṃ tatra babhrāma munisattamaḥ ||
Then, flooded by the vast waters born of the ocean, / the entire moving and unmoving [creation was engulfed], and the best of sages wandered there.
3.27.28
matsyādibhiśca viprendraḥ kiñcit kṣatayutaḥ kṛtaḥ |
sasmāra gaṇanāthaṃ sa mārkaṇḍeyo'tivihvalaḥ ||
Wounded somewhat by fish and other creatures, the chief of brahmins, / that Mārkaṇḍeya, extremely distressed, remembered the Lord of the Gaṇas.
3.27.29
tato dadarśa tatraiva vaṭapatrasthitaṃ śiśum |
aṅguṣṭhaparvamātraṃ sa viṣṇuṃ sarvārthadaṃ param ||
Then, right there, he saw an infant resting upon a banyan leaf, / merely the size of the joint of a thumb—supreme Viṣṇu, who grants all goals.
3.27.30
taṃ praṇamya pratuṣṭāva mārkaṇḍeyo maharṣayaḥ |
atharvaśirasā devaṃ santuṣṭaṃ sa cakāra ha ||
Bowing to him, Mārkaṇḍeya praised him, O great sages; / he pleased the god with the Atharvaśiras [Upaniṣad].
3.27.31
uvāca taṃ sa viprendraṃ kimicchasi mahāmune |
vada te'haṃ pradāsyāmi varado nātra saṃśayaḥ ||
He said to that chief of brahmins: "What do you desire, O great sage? / Speak! I shall grant it to you, for I am a giver of boons, there is no doubt of this."
3.27.32
taṃ praṇamya tatho'vāca mārkaṇḍeyaḥ prasannadhīḥ |
māyāṃ darśaya me viṣṇo tāṃ jñātvā santyajāmyaham ||
Bowing to him, Mārkaṇḍeya, his mind clarified, spoke thus: / "O Viṣṇu, show me māyā; having understood it, I shall abandon it."
3.27.33
tatastaṃ viṣṇurūpaḥ sa bālako bhaktiyantritaḥ |
jagāda hāsyasaṃyukto bhaktarakṣaṇatatparaḥ ||
Then that child, possessing the form of Viṣṇu, bound by devotion, / spoke with a smile, intent on protecting his devotee:
3.27.34
khaṃ. 3 a. 27 pāna 58) bālaviṣṇuruvāca |
paśya māyāṃ maharṣe tvaṃ jñānadṛṣṭyā mahāmune |
jñānacakṣurmayā dattaṃ tubhyaṃ bhaktiprabhāvataḥ ||
Section 3, Chapter 27, Page 58) The child Viṣṇu said: / "Behold māyā, O great sage, with the vision of knowledge, O great ascetic; / the eye of knowledge has been granted to you by me through the power of devotion."
3.27.35
mārkaṇḍeyastato viprā jñānacakṣuḥsamanvitaḥ |
māyāmapaśyadānandānnānābhāvaprakāśinīm ||
Then Mārkaṇḍeya, endowed with the eye of knowledge, O brahmins, / beheld with joy māyā revealing manifold states of being.
3.27.36
vyāpyavyāpakarūpeṇa dvijāḥ sarvatra saṃsthitāḥ |
nānāguṇavibhedena mohayanti narān sadā ||
Pervading everywhere in the form of the pervaded and the pervader, O twice-born, / through the various divisions of the guṇas, they constantly delude men.
3.27.37
kutra brahmāṇḍanāśaśca kutra brahmāṇḍapālanam |
kutrotpattiśca viprendrā dṛśyate tena yoginā ||
In one place the destruction of the universe, in another the preservation of the universe, / and in another its origination was seen by that yogin, O chiefs of brahmins.
3.27.38
kutra śūnyamayaṃ kutra pūrṇarūpaṃ tathā punaḥ |
dhyānasaṃsthaṃ paraṃ brahma dadarśa munisattamaḥ ||
In one place full of emptiness, in another of full form once again; / the best of sages beheld the supreme Brahman abiding in meditation.
3.27.39
kutra yogārthamatyantaṃ narāḥ paramabhāvikāḥ |
lipyante kutra bhogārthaṃ mokṣārthaṃ kutracid dvijāḥ ||
In one place men, supremely devoted, strove intensely for yoga; / in another they were attached to sense pleasures, and in another to liberation, O twice-born.
3.27.40
punaḥ punaśca sṛjyante mriyante ca punaḥ punaḥ |
īśvarāneśvarāḥ kutra prabhavantīśvarā narāḥ ||
Again and again they are created, and again and again they die; / in some places lords are powerless, and in some, mortal men become lords.
3.27.41
amṛtaṃ viṣarūpaṃ ca viṣaṃ cāmṛtadāyakam |
dadarśa tatra viprarṣiḥ sūryaṃ śītatvamāsthitam ||
Nectar had the form of poison, and poison was the giver of nectar; / there the brahmin-sage beheld the sun become cold.
3.27.42
sthale jalaṃ jale caiva sthalaṃ nānāvikārajam |
muktaṃ naraṃ tathā baddhaṃ dadarśa munisattamaḥ ||
Water on dry land, and dry land in water, born of various transformations; / the best of sages beheld man liberated and also bound.
3.27.43
na pralebhe gatiṃ tatreśvaro bhrāntyā hyanīśvaraḥ |
jagacca jagadātmā vai tato'sau vismito'bhavat ||
The lord found no course there, [rendered] powerless indeed by delusion; / the world and the Self of the world [were confounded], and so he became astonished.
3.27.44
evaṃ nānāvidhaṃ bhāvaṃ dadarśa munisattamaḥ |
na śakyate mayā vaktuṃ varṣakoṭiśatairapi ||
Thus the best of sages beheld manifold states of being; / it is not possible for me to recount it even in hundreds of millions of years.
3.27.45
tatastaṃ parituṣṭāva bālaviṣṇuṃ mahāmuniḥ |
nānāstotraiḥ sutuṣṭaṃ sa prārthayāmāsa bhāvataḥ ||
Then the great sage praised that child Viṣṇu; / having delighted him with various hymns of praise, he prayed with devotion:
3.27.46
nivartaya hare māyāṃ kuru māṃ pūrvavadyathā |
iti prārthayamānaṃ sa cakre sve cāśrame sthitam ||
"Withdraw māyā, O Hari! Make me as I was before!" / As he was praying thus, [the child] caused him to remain in his own hermitage.
3.27.47
tatastatra dvijendreṇa na dṛṣṭamiva tadbabhau |
yathā svapnagataṃ janturna dadarśa samutthitaḥ ||
Then, to the chief of brahmins, it appeared as though nothing had been seen there, / just as a living being, having awakened, sees nothing of what occurred in a dream.
3.27.48
na jalaṃ naiva sāmudraṃ bhayaṃ duḥkhaṃ na keśavaḥ |
bālarūpadharaścaiva na māyā tena vismitaḥ ||
No water, no ocean, no fear, no sorrow, no Keśava / bearing the form of a child, and no māyā; by this he was astonished.
3.27.49
vālakhilyāstato viprastyaktvā māyāṃ bhramātmikām |
gaṇeśabhajane sakto'japadvai mantramuttamam ||
O Vālakhilyas, then the brahmin, abandoning the māyā consisting of delusion, / devoted to the worship of Gaṇeśa, recited the supreme mantra.
3.27.50
naranārāyaṇābhyāṃ yaḥ kathito yoga uttamaḥ |
herambamantrabhāvena sādhayāmāsa taṃ punaḥ ||
That supreme yoga which had been taught by Nara and Nārāyaṇa, / he accomplished again through the contemplation of Heramba's mantra.
3.27.51
rāmeṇa sādhitaḥ pūrvaṃ tathā tenā'pi sādhitaḥ |
yogaḥ śāntipradaḥ pūrṇo gāṇapatyasvabhāvataḥ ||
As it had previously been accomplished by Rāma, so was it accomplished by him as well— / the yoga that bestows peace, complete through the innate nature of a Gāṇapatya.
3.27.52
yogaśāntiparo bhūtvā'bhajattaṃ gaṇanāyakam |
ananyacetasā so'pi mārkaṇḍeyaḥ suyogavit ||
Devoted to the peace of yoga, that Mārkaṇḍeya, an expert knower of yoga, / worshipped that Leader of the Gaṇas with an undistracted mind.
3.27.53
ante gaṇeśadehe sa sāyujyaṃ prāpa bhaktitaḥ |
evaṃ nānāvidhā viprā gāṇeśāḥ sambhavanti vai ||
In the end, through devotion, he attained union with the body of Gaṇeśa. / Thus, O brahmins, various devotees of Gaṇeśa come into being.
3.27.54
etan mṛkaṇḍaputrasya caritaṃ yaḥ śṛṇoti vā |
paṭhettu tasya vai māyābandho na prabhaviṣyati ||
Whoever hears or reads this life of the son of Mṛkaṇḍu, / for him the bondage of māyā shall have no power.
3.27.55
mahodaro bhaveddevo herambākhyaḥ prakīrtitaḥ |
vidyādhīśapure bhaktisiddhidastatra tiṣṭhati ||
Mahodara is the god celebrated under the name of Heramba; / he dwells in the city of the Lord of Learning, granting the perfection of devotion.
3.27.56
ato'haṃ gaṇanāthaṃ taṃ prabhaje vālakhilyakāḥ |
yogabhāvena saṃsādhyaṃ kṛtvā bhaktisamanvitaḥ ||
Therefore, O Vālakhilyas, I worship that Lord of the Gaṇas, / having brought him within reach through yoga, full of devotion."
3.27.57
mudgala uvāca |
evaṃ bhānorvacaḥ śrutvā praṇemurvālakhilyakāḥ |
raviṃ sarvatra cātmānaṃ tuṣṭuvurvividhaiḥ stavaiḥ ||
Mudgala said: / Having heard these words of the sun, the Vālakhilyas bowed / to the sun, the Self in all things, and praised him with various hymns.
3.27.58
ūcuḥ prāñjalayaste taṃ bhānuṃ sarvapriyaṃ punaḥ |
kṛtakṛtyāḥ kṛtā bhāno vayaṃ deva na saṃśayaḥ ||
With folded hands, they spoke once more to that sun who is dear to all: / "We have been made to have accomplished our purpose, O sun, O god, there is no doubt.
3.27.59
khaṃ. 3 a. 28 pāna 59) kiṃ pradadmo mahātmaṃstvāṃ deho'yaṃ te samarpitaḥ |
tena tuṣṭo bhava svāmin gururasmākamādarāt ||
Section 3, Chapter 28, Page 59) What can we give to you, O great-souled one? This body is offered to you; / be pleased with that, O Lord, our Guru, through our reverence."
3.27.60
tataḥ sarve pupūjustaṃ vālakhilyāstapodhanāḥ |
praṇamya prayayuste vai tapase vanamuttamam ||
Then all the Vālakhilyas, rich in asceticism, worshipped him; / having bowed, they departed indeed to the excellent forest for ascetic practice.
3.27.61
sādhayitvā yathāyogaṃ śrutamatra prajāpate |
yoginaḥ sarvavandyāste sambabhūvurviśeṣataḥ ||
Having mastered what was heard here in accordance with yoga, O Prajāpati, / they became yogins especially worthy of worship by all.
3.27.62
herambaṃ bhajamānāśca nityaṃ dhyānaparāyaṇāḥ |
ananyabuddhayaḥ sarve yogaśāntiṃ pralebhire ||
Worshipping Heramba and constantly devoted to meditation, / with minds focused on none other, they all attained the peace of yoga.
3.27.63
herambākhyāvatāraśca mahodarakalātmakaḥ |
kathitaste prajāpāla nānākhyānasamanvitaḥ ||
And the incarnation named Heramba, consisting of a portion of Mahodara, / has been narrated to you, O protector of creatures, accompanied by various tales.
3.27.64
etādṛśā'vatārāśca bahavastasya mānada |
mahodarasya teṣāṃ yaccaritraṃ paramādbhutam ||
Many indeed are such incarnations of that Mahodara, O giver of honor; / their deeds are supremely wondrous.
3.27.65
naiva śakyaṃ kathayituṃ tat kenā'pi na saṃśayaḥ |
ataḥ saṅkṣepataḥ proktaṃ mayā dakṣa prajāpate ||
It is not possible for anyone to narrate them, there is no doubt of this; / therefore it has been recounted in brief by me, O Dakṣa, O Prajāpati.
3.27.66
sūryasya vālakhilyānāṃ saṃvādaḥ paramādbhutaḥ |
brahmabhūyapradaḥ prokto dharmakāmārthamokṣadaḥ ||
This supremely wondrous dialogue between the sun and the Vālakhilyas / is declared to bestow the state of Brahman and to grant dharma, desire, wealth, and liberation.
3.27.67
prabhavet sa viśeṣeṇa sarvasampatpradāyakaḥ |
mohanāśakaraḥ pūrṇaḥ śrotumicchasi kiṃ punaḥ ||
It is particularly capable of granting all prosperity, / destroying delusion completely. What further do you wish to hear?
3.27.67.c1
oṃ tatsaditi śrīmadāntye purāṇopaniṣadi śrīmanmaudgale mahāpurāṇe tṛtīye khaṇḍe mahodaracarite sūryavālakhilyasaṃvādasamāptivarṇanaṃ nāma saptaviṃśatitamo'dhyāyaḥ ||
