sasmāra svaguruṃ vipraṃ kaśyapaṃ sṛṣṭikārakam ||

remembered his guru, the Brahmin Kaśyapa, the maker of creation.
3.40.24
smṛtamātraḥ sa tasyā'gre kaśyapaḥ sahasā''yayau |
taṃ tathā duḥkhasaṃyuktaṃ dṛṣṭvā sanduḥkhito'bhavat ||

seeing him thus joined with suffering, he was deeply grieved.

sarvavighnanihantāraṃ bhaktebhyaḥ śāntidāyakam ||
He said to his disciple: "Worship Gaṇanāyaka,
the destroyer of all obstacles, the bestower of peace upon devotees."
3.40.26
tatastaṃ muniśārdūlaṃ māṇḍavyaḥ prajagāda vai |
kena mārgeṇa vighneśaṃ taṃ bhajāmi vadasva mām ||

gaṇeśasya svarūpaṃ vai bhaktebhyaḥ sukhadaṃ param ||
Hearing that word of his, Kaśyapa said to him:
"The true form of Gaṇeśa indeed bestows the supreme happiness upon devotees."

pañcadhā cittavṛtteśca cālako'yaṃ gajānanaḥ |
cintāmaṇiriti khyāto vedānte vedavādibhiḥ ||
Kaśyapa said:
This Gajānana is the impeller of the mind's fivefold operations;
he is known as Cintāmaṇi in Vedānta by the exponents of the Veda.
3.40.29
samprajñātasvarūpo vai dehastasya mahāmune |
asamprajñātarūpaṃ ca śiro gaṇapateḥ smṛtam ||

bhramarūpāṃ mahāmāyāṃ siddhiṃ viddhi mahāmate ||

3.40.38
madīyakarmadoṣeṇa śūlaproto'hameva ca |
ajānatā tvayā rājan kṛtaṃ tena sahāmyaham ||

tato nṛpeṇa viprārthaṃ lohakāravicakṣaṇāḥ |
samānītāśca taistatra kṛto yatno viśeṣataḥ ||
Then expert blacksmiths were brought by the king for the sake of the Brahmin, / and they made a special effort there.
3.40.40
śūlāgraṃ hastagaṃ tatraikabhāgaṃ saṅgataṃ babhau |
niṣkāsituṃ na śaktāste vyākulā bhayasaṃyutāḥ ||

3.40.41
śastraiḥ sañcheditaṃ taistat śūlāgraṃ hastagaṃ vidhe |
yāvanmātraṃ munerhaste saṃsthitaṃ tatsthitaṃ babhau ||
The tip of the stake that had entered the hand was cut off with weapons by them, O Creator; / whatever portion remained in the sage's hand, it remained shining there.
3.40.42
rājñā sampūjito vipraḥ prayayau yamasannidhim |
uvāca koparaktākṣo yamaṃ yamavatāṃ varam ||
Worshipped by the king, the Brahmin went to the presence of Yama; / with eyes red with anger, he spoke to Yama, the foremost of the restrained:
3.40.43
māṇḍavya uvāca |
mayā kiṃ prakṛtaṃ karma pāparūpaṃ vadasva mām |
yenā'haṃ śūlajaṃ duḥkhaṃ prāptaḥ śīghraṃ mahāśaṭha ||
Māṇḍavya said: / "What sinful action was done by me? Tell me, / by which I have suffered the misery born of the stake, quickly, O great rogue!"
3.40.44
tasya krodhayutaṃ vākyaṃ śrutvā bhayasamanvitaḥ |
prāñjaliḥ pratyuvācedaṃ vacanaṃ karmasūcakam ||
Hearing his angry speech, filled with fear, / with folded hands, [Yama] answered this speech indicating karma:
3.40.45
yama uvāca |
bālabhāve tvayā brahman kīṭaḥ kaṇṭakavedhitaḥ |
tatkarmaṇaḥ phalaṃ prāptaṃ tadeva munisattama ||
Yama said: / "In childhood, O Brahmin, an insect was pierced with a thorn by you; / the fruit of that very karma has been obtained, O best of sages."
3.40.46
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā krodhayukto mahāmuniḥ |
jagāda dharmarājaṃ taṃ māṇḍavyaśca prajāpate ||
Hearing that speech of his, the great sage was filled with anger; / and Māṇḍavya spoke to that king of dharma, O Prajāpati:
3.40.47
aho bālasvabhāvena kṛtaṃ karma mayā kila |
ajñānena mahāmūrkha tasyedaṃ kiṃ phalaṃ bhavet ||
"Oh, that act was indeed done by me out of a child's nature, / in ignorance, O great fool! Should this be its fruit?
3.40.48
ato nītivihīnastvaṃ patiṣyasi dharātale |
śūdrayonau śataṃ varṣāṇi bhuktvā punareṣyasi ||
Therefore, devoid of justice, you shall fall to the surface of the earth; / having experienced a hundred years in the womb of a Śūdra, you shall return again.
3.40.49
adhunā'haṃ karomyetāṃ maryādāṃ śṛṇu bhānuja |
aṣṭavarṣavayoyuktaiḥ kṛtaṃ karma hi niṣphalam ||

3.40.50
mama vākyena bhavatu gaṇarājaprasādataḥ |
tadādi bālakaiḥ karma kṛtaṃ tanniṣphalaṃ bhavet ||
Let it be so by my word, through the grace of Gaṇarāja! / From that time on, action done by children shall be fruitless."
3.40.51
māṇḍavyaḥ svāśrame gatvā tatāpa tapa uttamam |
ekākṣaravidhānena toṣayāmāsa vighnapam ||
Māṇḍavya went to his own hermitage and performed excellent austerities; / he pleased the lord of obstacles according to the rite of the single-syllable [mantra].
