3.47.p1
śrīgaṇeśāya namaḥ ||
Salutations to the blessed Gaṇeśa.
3.47.1
śrīśuka uvāca |
tatra nānākathāṃ cakrurnānāmatavikāsinīm |
svasvabuddhyā viśeṣeṇa mukhyāḥ prahlāda ādarāt ||
Śrī Śuka said:
There they held various discourses, illuminating diverse doctrines,
chiefly by their own intellect, O Prahlāda, with deep respect.
3.47.2
kecidāhurvidhātāraṃ viṣṇuṃ śaktiṃ śivaṃ ravim |
brahmarūpaṃ gaṇeśānaṃ nānāmataparāyaṇāḥ ||
Some proclaimed the Creator, Viṣṇu, the Goddess, Śiva, or the Sun,
while others, devoted to various doctrines, proclaimed Gaṇeśa, the form of Brahman.
3.47.3
kecidannaṃ ca prāṇaṃ ca manovijñānakaṃ tathā |
ānandaṃ so'hamekaṃ vai caitanyaṃ bindukaṃ pare ||
Some spoke of food, vital breath, mind, and consciousness,
bliss, the solitary 'I am He', consciousness, while others spoke of the point (bindu).
3.47.4
bodhamātmānameke ca sāṅkhyaṃ karma tathā'pare |
samamavyaktarūpaṃ te āhurbrahma tathā'param ||
Some spoke of awareness and the Self, others of Sāṅkhya and karma;
they called the unmanifest form equal, and yet others spoke of Brahman.
3.47.5
svasaṃvedyaṃ tathā kecinnivṛttiṃ śāntirūpakam |
yogamadhyātmarūpaṃ ta āhurvedaparāyaṇāḥ ||
Some called it self-cognized, others called it cessation, having the form of peace;
those devoted to the Vedas called it yoga, having the form of the inner Self.
3.47.6
asatyaṃ satyameke ca pūrṇānandaṃ tathā'sura |
sahajaṃ ca paraṃ brahma vādayuktā babhūvire ||
Some spoke of non-truth, some of truth, and others of complete bliss, O Asura;
they engaged in debate over the innate, supreme Brahman.
3.47.7
khaṃ. 3 a. 47 pāna 102) niścayastatra daityeśa na babhūva mataiṣiṇām |
svasvajñānasamāyuktā vādaṃ cakrurapaṇḍitāḥ ||
Section 3, Chapter 47, page 102) No conclusion was reached there among the seekers of doctrines, O lord of the Daityas;
endowed with their own views, the unlearned engaged in dispute.
3.47.8
tato vādasya śāntyarthamavocad viṣṇuravyayaḥ |
sarvān samāgatāṃstatra sarvajñaḥ śaṅkareritaḥ ||
Then, for the sake of calming the debate, the imperishable Viṣṇu spoke;
prompted by Śaṅkara, the all-knowing one addressed all who had assembled there.
3.47.9
śrīviṣṇuruvāca |
vedā gurusvarūpāśca sarveṣāṃ nātra saṃśayaḥ |
tairyat sampāditaṃ deva munayaḥ sarva āgatāḥ ||
The blessed Viṣṇu said:
The Vedas have the nature of the Guru for all; of this there is no doubt.
Whatever is established by them, O god, all the sages have arrived [to hear].
3.47.10
sampādyatāṃ viśeṣeṇa brahmaṇo niścayārthinaḥ |
sukhaṃ tadeva sarveṣāṃ sarvamānyaṃ bhaviṣyati ||
Let it be established especially by those seeking certainty regarding Brahman;
that very happiness will be universally accepted by everyone.
3.47.11
vedaiḥ svānubhavaṃ gītaṃ yāthātathyaṃ munīśvarāḥ |
ato vedaiśca sarveṣāṃ jñānaṃ sañjāyate param ||
Their own direct experience has been sung by the Vedas truthfully, O best of sages;
therefore, supreme knowledge arises for all through the Vedas.
3.47.12
yogādibhirjanāḥ kecin munayo devarākṣasāḥ |
sākṣādrūpaṃ ca tadbrahma kurvate nātra saṃśayaḥ ||
Some people, sages, gods, and rākṣasas, through yoga and the like,
perceive that Brahman directly; of this there is no doubt.
3.47.13
tathāpi vedasammānyaṃ vacasteṣāṃ na vidyate |
vedānāṃ na samo viprā yogajñaḥ kutra dṛśyate ||
Nevertheless, their word is not universally respected like the Vedas.
Where is a knower of yoga seen equal to the Vedas, O Brahmins?
3.47.14
sampūrṇayogino vedā ataste guravo matāḥ |
mahābhāgāḥ smaradhvaṃ tvāṃstadā niḥsaṃśayo bhavet ||
The Vedas are complete yogins; therefore they are considered your teachers.
O fortunate ones, remember them; then all doubt will cease.
3.47.15
tato munigaṇāḥ sarve yogino devanāyakāḥ |
sādhu sādhu samūcustaṃ viṣṇuṃ buddhimatāṃ varam ||
Then all the hosts of sages, the yogins, and the leaders of the gods
said, ‘Excellent, excellent!’ to that Viṣṇu, the foremost among the wise.
3.47.16
tataḥ śaṅkaramukhyaistaiḥ saṃsmṛtāḥ kāryasiddhye |
sāṅgāḥ samāyayurvedā oṅkāreṇa samanvitāḥ ||
Then they, headed by Śaṅkara, remembered them for the accomplishment of their purpose;
accompanied by their auxiliary limbs, the Vedas arrived together with the syllable Oṃ.
3.47.17
tān dṛṣṭvā sahasotthāya devāḥ sarṣigaṇāḥ pare |
praṇamya pūjayāmāsuḥ kṛtāñjalipuṭāḥ puraḥ ||
Seeing them, the gods, along with the hosts of sages and others, suddenly stood up;
having bowed down, they worshipped them with joined hands before them.
3.47.18
āsaneṣu samāsīnāḥ soṅkārā vedamukhyakāḥ |
ūcustān śivamukhyān vai prahṛṣṭamanaso'bhavan ||
Seated upon seats, the principal Vedas accompanied by the syllable Oṃ
spoke to those gods headed by Śiva, their minds overjoyed.
3.47.19
vedā ūcuḥ |
kimarthaṃ smaraṇaṃ devā munayaśca kṛtaṃ janāḥ |
asmākaṃ brūta kāryaṃ tat kariṣyāmo na saṃśayaḥ ||
The Vedas said:
Why has this remembrance been made by you, O gods, sages, and people?
Tell us that task; we shall carry it out, of this there is no doubt.
3.47.20
vedānāṃ vacanaṃ śrutvā śivastānabravīdvacaḥ |
vinayena viśeṣajño niścayārthaṃ hitaiṣiṇām ||
Hearing the words of the Vedas, Śiva spoke these words,
he who is discerning in modesty, for the certainty of those desiring welfare.
3.47.21
śiva uvāca |
brahmayajñaḥ samārabdho'smābhiḥ sarvairhitepsubhiḥ |
tatra vādasamāyuktā na tadantaṃ labhāmahe ||
Śiva said:
A sacrifice of Brahman has been undertaken by all of us who desire our welfare;
engaged in dispute therein, we do not reach its conclusion.
3.47.22
ato bhavatsmṛtirvedāḥ kṛtā'smābhirviśeṣataḥ |
niścayaṃ guravo yūyaṃ vadadhvaṃ bhedanāśakam ||
Therefore, remembrance of you, O Vedas, has been made especially by us.
As our teachers, pronounce a conclusion that destroys all division.
3.47.23
yogino na bhavantīha kadāpi ca bhavatsamāḥ |
bhavadvacaḥpramāṇena yogajñā vayamapyuta ||
Yogins here can never be equal to you;
by the authority of your word, we too are knowers of yoga.
3.47.24
śivasya vacanaṃ śrutvā vedāstatra jagurvacaḥ |
devān munīn janān sarvān dīnapā asureśvara ||
Hearing the words of Śiva, the Vedas, protectors of the humble,
spoke words there to the gods, the sages, and all the people, O lord of the Asuras.
3.47.25
vedā ūcuḥ |
brahmayajñasya pāraṃ vai gamiṣyāmaḥ kathaṃ vayam |
akṣarātmakadehatvāttathāpi kathayāmahe ||
The Vedas said:
How indeed shall we reach the further shore of the sacrifice of Brahman,
since our bodies consist of syllables? Nevertheless, we shall speak.
3.47.26
na vayaṃ brahmarūpāśca brahmajñāḥ kiñcidapyaho |
yogamārgabalenaiva vadiṣyāmo yathātatham ||
We are not the form of Brahman, nor are we knowers of Brahman to any degree, alas!
Only by the power of the path of yoga shall we speak truly.
3.47.27
pratyekaniścayaṃ devāḥ śṛṇuta brahmadhāraṇam |
yena saṃśayasaṃhīnā gamiṣyatha parāṃ gatim ||
O gods, hear the particular ascertainment and the conception of Brahman,
by which, free from doubt, you will attain the supreme goal.
3.47.28
brahma nānāvidhaṃ proktaṃ mayā yogabalena ca |
prajñānādimahāvākyaisteṣu yogo viśiṣyate ||
Manifold Brahman has been declared by me through the power of yoga;
among the great sayings such as 'Consciousness is Brahman', yoga is supreme.
3.47.29
sarvabrahmasuyogasya sthānaṃ yogātmakaṃ bhavet |
yoge brahmāṇi sarvāṇi tadākārāṇi varṇitam ||
The locus of the true union with all Brahman consists of yoga;
in yoga, all Brahmans are described as having that very form.
3.47.30
na yogāt paramaṃ brahma yogaśāntyā pralabhyate |
brahmaṇaspatireko'yaṃ mayā prokto gaṇeśvaraḥ ||
There is no supreme Brahman apart from yoga; it is attained through the peace of yoga.
This Gaṇeśvara alone has been declared by me to be Brahmaṇaspati.
3.47.31
brahmaṇāṃ sakalānāṃ ca pātṛpālayitṛtvataḥ |
taṃ bhajadhvaṃ suraśreṣṭhā munayo bhaktisaṃyutāḥ ||
Because he is the protector and preserver of all Brahmans,
worship him with devotion, O best of gods and sages!
3.47.32
khaṃ. 3 a. 47 pāna 103) bhavanti brahmabhūtāḥ sarve janāstena niścitam |
evamuktvā bahvṛcastu tūṣṇīmbhāvadharo'bhavat ||
Section 3, Chapter 47, page 103) Through him, all people certainly become merged in Brahman.
Having spoken thus, the Ṛgveda fell silent.
3.47.33
tato yajuḥ svayaṃ sākṣādavocat sarvasaṃsadi |
brahmapradaṃ ca vacanaṃ tatra svānubhavātmakam ||
Then the Yajurveda himself spoke directly in the entire assembly,
uttering words that bestow Brahman and consist of direct self-realization.
3.47.34
yajuruvāca |
nānāvidhaṃ mayā brahma varṇitaṃ yogasevayā |
mahāvākyaiśca sarvajñāḥ kramārthaṃ nātra saṃśayaḥ ||
The Yajurveda said:
Through the practice of yoga, Brahman has been described by me in manifold ways,
and through the Great Sayings, O all-knowing ones, for the sake of gradual realization; of this there is no doubt.
3.47.35
tatra yogasvarūpākhyamāntyaṃ brahma viśiṣyate |
sarvabrahmasuyogena yogastena prakathyate ||
Among these, the final Brahman, known as having the nature of yoga, is preeminent;
because of the true union of all Brahmans, it is called yoga.
3.47.36
tadeva gaṇarājaśca bhaktaiḥ samprārthitaḥ purā |
yogaprāptyarthamatyantaṃ tena sākārako'bhavat ||
That very [Brahman] is the Lord of Gaṇas, who was beseeched of old by devotees
for the sake of attaining the highest yoga; on that account He assumed a form.
3.47.37
gaṇaḥ samūharūpākhyaḥ samūhā brahmarūpiṇaḥ |
teṣāṃ svāmī na sandehastaṃ bhajadhvaṃ vidhānataḥ ||
A gaṇa is called a totality, and totalities consist of Brahman;
He is undeniably their master; worship Him according to the prescribed rules.
3.47.38
annānāṃ sakalānāṃ ca sadaikānekarūpiṇām |
samūhe brahma jñātavyamannātmakamiti śrutiḥ ||
In the totality of all kinds of food, which always have one and many forms,
Brahman is to be known as consisting of food; so states the Śruti.
3.47.39
nānāvidhāni ca brahmāṇyevaṃ bho daivatarṣayaḥ |
jñātavyāni vicāreṇa gaṇarūpāṇi niścitam ||
In this manner, O divine sages, the manifold Brahmans
are certainly to be known through inquiry as having the nature of gaṇas.
3.47.40
ato gaṇeśabhaktyā vai sakalaṃ sulabhaṃ bhavet |
brahmabhūyapradaḥ prokto mayā yogena yogapaḥ ||
Therefore, through devotion to Gaṇeśa, everything becomes easy to attain;
the guardian of yoga who bestows the state of Brahman has been proclaimed by me through yoga.
3.47.41
ityuktvā virarāmā'tha yajuryogavidāṃ varam |
uvācā'tha tataḥ sāma brahma nirṇayakāraṇam ||
Having spoken thus, the Yajurveda, the best among knowers of yoga, fell silent.
Then the Sāmaveda spoke, providing the ascertainment of Brahman.
3.47.42
sāma uvāca |
yogasevanasāmarthyāt samartho'haṃ ca varṇane |
kiñcit śṛṇuta deveśā brahmaṇo munayo vacaḥ ||
The Sāmaveda said:
Through the power of practicing yoga, I am able to describe [it];
listen, O lords of gods and sages, to a brief statement about Brahman.
3.47.43
proktāni nānā brahmāṇi mahāvākyādibhirmayā |
pātrabhedārthamatyantaṃ jñātavyaṃ yogasevayā ||
Manifold Brahmans have been declared by me through the Great Sayings and the like;
this is to be understood through the practice of yoga for the purpose of distinguishing different recipients.
3.47.44
tatra śāntipradaṃ brahma yogākhyaṃ nātra saṃśayaḥ |
bhavati brahmaṇāṃ yogo yatra tena ca yogakaḥ ||
Among them, the Brahman called yoga undeniably bestows peace;
that wherein the union of Brahmans takes place is called yoga.
3.47.45
nāsti yogāt paraṃ brahma śāntimārgeṇa labhyate |
tadeva munayo devā gaṇeśo nātra saṃśayaḥ ||
There is no Brahman higher than yoga, and it is attained through the path of peace;
that very [Brahman], O sages and gods, is Gaṇeśa; of this there is no doubt.
3.47.46
manovāṇīmayaṃ devā mayā yadyat prakīrtitam |
gakārākṣarasambhūtaṃ jñātavyaṃ vibudhaiḥ sadā ||
Whatever has been celebrated by me as consisting of mind and speech, O gods,
is to be known by the wise as always originating from the syllable 'ga'.
3.47.47
manovāṇīvihīnaṃ yadvarṇyate vividhaṃ tathā |
ṇakārākṣaragaṃ sarvaṃ niścitaṃ yogasevayā ||
Whatever is variously described as devoid of mind and speech
is certainly situated in the syllable 'ṇa' through the practice of yoga.
3.47.48
tayoḥ svāmī gaṇeśāno yogākāraḥ prakīrtitaḥ |
taṃ bhajadhvaṃ viśeṣeṇa brahmabhūtapadapradam ||
Lord Gaṇeśa, proclaimed as having the form of yoga, is the master of both;
worship Him particularly, who grants the state of becoming Brahman.
3.47.49
nānābhāvena yuktāstaṃ bhajante taddadāti saḥ |
evamuktvā mahāyogī virarāma sa sāmagaḥ ||
He grants whatever people endowed with various dispositions worship Him for.
Having spoken thus, that great yogin, the singer of the Sāman, fell silent.
3.47.50
tato'tharvā mahāyogī jagāda sakalāṃstadā |
brahmayajñasya vettā'sau prahlāda śṛṇu tadvacaḥ ||
Then the great yogin Atharvan, the knower of the Brahmayajña, addressed them all;
O Prahlāda, listen to his words.
3.47.51
atharvā uvāca |
ātmā'hamiti vākyādyairbrahma nānāvidhaṃ mayā |
sampāditaṃ ca yogena tadevopādhisaṃyutam ||
Atharvan said:
Through statements such as 'I am the Ātman,' Brahman of manifold kinds
was established by me through yoga, as that very [Brahman] endowed with limiting adjuncts.
3.47.52
yogākhyaṃ paramaṃ brahma tadyogena pralabhyate |
saṃyogāyogahīno'yaṃ yogo brahma sutiṣṭhati ||
The supreme Brahman named yoga is attained through that yoga;
devoid of conjunction and disjunction, this yoga stands firmly as Brahman.
3.47.53
śāntistatra samākhyātā yoge yogavidāṃ varaḥ |
sa eva gaṇanāthastu sarvaśāntiprado'bhavat ||
Peace is declared to be therein, in yoga, [by] the best among knowers of yoga;
that very Lord of Gaṇas has become the bestower of all peace.
3.47.54
eka eva gaṇeśāno jagatāṃ brahmaṇāṃ svayam |
īśaḥ samūharūpāṇāṃ yogarūpastataḥ smṛtaḥ ||
Gaṇeśa alone is Himself the Lord of the worlds and of the Brahmans
consisting of totalities; therefore He is remembered as having the nature of yoga.
3.47.55
sarveṣāmādirūpo'yaṃ yogākāraḥ prabhāvataḥ |
madhye nānāvidhaḥ svāṃśairjagat subrahma suprabhuḥ ||
By His might, He is the primal form of all, having the nature of yoga;
in the middle, the excellent Lord is manifold, through His own parts, as the world and the good Brahman.
3.47.56
ante svayaṃ tathā tiṣṭhettenādau pūjito'bhavat |
sarvapūjyaśca deveśā munayo niścayārthinaḥ ||
At the end, He Himself remains likewise; therefore He was worshipped in the beginning,
and He is worthy of worship by all, O lords of gods and sages seeking certainty.
3.47.56.p1
ya ādiḥ soṃ'tarūpastu bhavate sarvasammate |
(
That which is the beginning, that becomes the form of the end, as accepted by all; / [
3.47.57
khaṃ. 3 a. 48 pāna 104) madhye māyāvihāreṇa bhedābhedayuto'bhavat ||
Section 3, Chapter 48, Page 104] in the middle, through the play of māyā, He became possessed of difference and non-difference.
3.47.58
atastaṃ yogarūpākhyaṃ bhajadhvaṃ yogasevayā |
bhaviṣyatha brahmabhūtā brahmayajñasya pāragāḥ ||
Therefore, worship Him who is known as having the nature of yoga through the practice of yoga;
you will become absorbed in Brahman, having crossed to the further shore of the Brahmayajña.
3.47.59
evamuktvā mahāyogī virarāma mahāmate |
atharvā sarvayogajñastatroṅkāro'bravīdvacaḥ ||
Having spoken thus, O great-minded one, the great yogin Atharvan, knower of all yoga, fell silent;
then the Oṅkāra spoke these words.
3.47.60
oṅkāra uvāca |
caturvedapracuro'haṃ mayā yogasya sevayā |
brahma sākṣāt kṛtaṃ devāstena yogimato'bhavam ||
The Oṅkāra said:
I am abundant across the four Vedas; through the practice of yoga,
Brahman has been directly perceived by me; therefore, O gods, I became acknowledged by yogins.
3.47.61
mayopadeśitā vedāḥ sādhayāmāsuranvaham |
yogaṃ brahmapradaṃ tena brahmajñāḥ sarvasammatāḥ ||
Instructed by me, the Vedas daily practiced
the yoga that bestows Brahman; therefore they are universally accepted as knowers of Brahman.
3.47.62
yogāt paraṃ na vidyeta brahma sarvatra sammatam |
jagat subrahma suproktaṃ yogena brahma śāśvatam ||
No Brahman higher than yoga is known; this is universally agreed;
the world is well spoken of as Brahman, and Brahman is eternal through yoga.
3.47.63
tadeva gaṇarājo vai niścito yogibhiḥ sadā |
saṃyogāyogabhāvena krīḍate yogarūpadhṛk ||
That very [Brahman] is indeed determined by yogins always to be the Lord of Gaṇas;
bearing the form of yoga, He plays in states of conjunction and disjunction.
3.47.64
siddhirbhrāntimayī māyā buddhirbhrāntidharā matā |
tayoḥ svāmī gaṇeśāno māyābhyāṃ khelate vibhuḥ ||
Siddhi is considered to be māyā consisting of delusion, and buddhi to be holding delusion;
the all-pervading Lord Gaṇeśa is their master, playing with the two māyās.
3.47.65
bhukteḥ siddhistathā mukteḥ siddhirbrahmapradāyinī |
cittaṃ pañcavidhaṃ buddhistayoryogena labhyate ||
Siddhi is the bestower of Brahman through enjoyment as well as through liberation;
the mind is fivefold, and the intellect is attained through their union.
3.47.66
svasaṃvedyātmakaṃ brahma vedeṣu kathitaṃ param |
sarvasaṃyogarūpākhyaṃ tatrā'yaṃ dṛśyate svayam ||
The supreme Brahman, known only to oneself, is declared in the Vedas;
it is called the form of all conjunction, and therein He Himself is seen.
3.47.67
tena svānandavāsī ca māyāyuktaḥ prakīrtitaḥ |
ayoge darśanaṃ tasya jāyate na kadācana ||
Therefore He is celebrated as dwelling in Svānanda and joined with māyā;
His vision never occurs in the absence of yoga.
3.47.68
nirmāyikastataḥ proktastayoryogena labhyate |
gakāraścaiva saṃyogo ṇakāro'yoga ucyate ||
Therefore He is spoken of as devoid of māyā, and He is attained through the union of both;
the syllable 'ga' is conjunction, and the syllable 'ṇa' is said to be disjunction.
3.47.69
tena nāmnā samākhyāto gaṇeśo vedavādibhiḥ |
taṃ bhajadhvaṃ viśeṣeṇa brahmībhūtasya kāraṇāt ||
By that name He is proclaimed as Gaṇeśa by the expounders of the Veda;
worship Him especially for the sake of becoming Brahman.
3.47.70
brahmabhūtā dvijā devā bhaviṣyatha na saṃśayaḥ |
evamuktvā tadoṅkārastūṣṇīmāsīn mahāmate ||
O twice-born ones, O gods, you will become absorbed in Brahman; of this there is no doubt.
Having spoken thus, O great-minded one, the Oṅkāra then fell silent.
3.47.70.c1
oṃ tatsaditi śrīmadāntye purāṇopaniṣadi śrīmanmaudgale mahāpurāṇe tṛtīye khaṇḍe mahodaracarite brahmayajñe vedanirṇayo nāma saptacatvāriṃśo'dhyāyaḥ ||
Om tat sat. Thus ends the forty-seventh chapter, named 'The Ascertainment of the Vedas in the Brahmayajña,' in the story of Mahodara, in the third section of the glorious and final Purāṇa-Upaniṣad, the venerable Maudgala Mahāpurāṇa.
