vatsarā'sitaśāntivarṇanaṃ nāma daśamo'dhyāyaḥ
5.10.p1
śrīgaṇeśāya namaḥ ||
Homage to the glorious Gaṇeśa.
5.10.1
naidhruva uvāca |
śrutvā kathāṃ mahābhāga krodhaśāntikarīṃ prabho |
na tṛpyāmi punaḥ svāmin vada vighneśaceṣṭitam ||
Naidhruva said:
Having heard this tale that brings peace to anger, O noble lord,
I am not satiated, O master; tell again the deeds of Vighneśa.
5.10.2
tvayā pṛṣṭaḥ kathaṃ brahmā sa jagāda kimapyaho |
tadvadasva dayāsindho tāta yogapradaṃ hi cet ||
How was Brahmā questioned by you, and did he say anything? Ah,
tell that, O ocean of compassion, dear father, if indeed it bestows yoga.
5.10.3
mudgala uvāca |
evaṃ pṛṣṭo mahātejā naidhruveṇa pitṛvyakaḥ |
kathāntaramuvācedaṃ mahāyogapradaṃ mahat ||
Mudgala said:
Having been questioned thus by Naidhruva, the uncle of great splendor
spoke another story, which is great and bestows great yoga.
5.10.4
asita uvāca |
śṛṇu putra pravakṣyāmi yogaśāntipadapradam |
gaṇeśānasya māhātmyaṃ brahmeśasya vicakṣaṇa ||
Asita said:
Listen, my son! I shall tell the greatness of Gaṇeśa, the Lord of Brahman,
which grants the state of yoga and peace, O discerning one.
5.10.5
brahmāṇaṃ ca praṇamyādāvapṛcchaṃ vinayānvitaḥ |
vada tāta mahāyogaṃ śāntidaṃ sarvatāraka ||
Having first bowed down to Brahmā, I asked with modesty:
‘Speak, dear father, of the great yoga that grants peace, O savior of all!
5.10.6
sahaje ca mahāyogin svādhīnatvaṃ pradṛśyate |
svecchāmayaṃ kathaṃ nātha bhavati brahma te namaḥ ||
In the natural state, O great yogin, self-reliance is observed;
how, O Lord, does Brahman come to consist of one’s own will? Homage to you!
5.10.7
ataḥ śāntivihīnau tvāṃ samāgatau na saṃśayaḥ |
śāntyarthaṃ vada kiṃ sevyaṃ kariṣyāvastvadājñayā ||
Therefore, lacking peace, we two have approached you, without doubt;
tell what is to be cultivated for the sake of peace: we two shall do it at your command.’
5.10.8
asita uvāca |
vatsareṇa mayā tāta pṛṣṭaḥ sarvavidāṃ varaḥ |
uvāca premasaṃyukto gāṇapatyaḥ pitāmahaḥ ||
Asita said:
When questioned by me along with Vatsara, dear son, the Grandfather,
foremost among the knowers of all, devoted to Gaṇeśa, spoke with love.
5.10.9
brahmovāca |
karmajñānaṃ samaṃ brahma sahajaṃ tu caturthakam |
teṣāṃ saṃyogabhāve vai svānando maunadhārakaḥ ||
Brahmā said:
Action and knowledge are equal; Brahman is the natural, fourth [state];
in the conjunction of these, indeed, is Svānanda, holding silence.
5.10.10
tatra svādhīnagaṃ brahma parādhīnaṃ kutastridhā |
svasaṃvedyamayenaiva suto yogena labhyate ||
There Brahman abides in independence; whence could it be dependent in threefold form?
Only through yoga consisting of self-awareness, O son, is it attained.
5.10.11
saṃyogo māyayā yuktaḥ sarvasaṃyogabhāvataḥ |
ayoge sarvasaṃyogo naśyati vyatirekataḥ ||
Conjunction is joined with māyā, by reason of the state of conjunction with all;
in disjunction, the conjunction with all is destroyed through difference.
5.10.12
nivṛttyā svadhiyā brahma prāpyate nānyathā kvacit |
svakīyā'bhedatastatra nivṛttiryogibhirdhṛtā ||
Brahman is attained through cessation by means of one's own intellect, never otherwise;
through non-difference from one's own self, cessation is maintained there by the yogins.
5.10.13
saṃyogāyogayoryoge yogaḥ śāntipradāyakaḥ |
śāntyā sa eva labhyaśca sutau bhavati nānyathā ||
In the union of conjunction and disjunction, yoga bestows peace;
through peace he alone is to be attained, O two sons, and not otherwise.
5.10.14
śāntirūpadharaṃ pūrṇaṃ gaṇeśaṃ saṃvadanti ca |
vedāstaṃ bhāvasaṃyukto munī yadi bhajiṣyathaḥ ||
And the Vedas declare Gaṇeśa to be the complete one, assuming the form of peace;
if you two sages worship him endowed with devotion,
5.10.15
tadā śāntiyutau yogī bhavantau yogisammatau |
bhaviṣyatho mahābhāgau nānyathā me vaco'nṛtam ||
then, endowed with peace, you two yogins, approved by yogins,
will become very fortunate; not otherwise, my word is not false.
5.10.16
samprajñātamayo deho'samprajñātamayaṃ śiraḥ |
gajākāraṃ tayoryoge gaṇeśo dehadhārakaḥ ||
His body consists of the cognitive, his head of the ultra-cognitive;
in the union of the two, Gaṇeśa bears a body having the form of an elephant.
5.10.17
gaṇāḥ samūharūpāśca samūhā brahmavācakāḥ |
teṣāṃ svāmī na sandeho gaṇeśo nāmadhārakaḥ ||
The gaṇas are of the nature of multitudes, and the multitudes signify Brahman;
Gaṇeśa is their master, bearing this name without a doubt.
5.10.18
cittarūpā mahābuddhiścittamohakarī matā |
siddhistayoḥ patiḥ sākṣādgaṇeśo vedavādataḥ ||
Great intellect is of the nature of the mind, and perfection is considered to cause infatuation of the mind;
their husband is manifestly Gaṇeśa, according to the declaration of the Vedas.
5.10.19
cittaṃ mohayutaṃ tyaktvā cintāmaṇiṃ bhajiṣyathaḥ |
yogaśāntyā mahābhāgau nityaṃ taṃ yogarūpakam ||
Having abandoned the mind accompanied by delusion, you two shall worship Cintāmaṇi,
who is the embodiment of yoga, constantly through the peace of yoga, O highly fortunate ones.’
5.10.20
asita uvāca |
evamuktvā vidhātā vāṃ virarāma mahāmate |
vatsareṇa samāyuktastaṃ praṇamya vane'gamam ||
Asita said:
Having spoken thus to you two, the Creator ceased, O highly intelligent one;
accompanied by Vatsara, having bowed to him, I went to the forest.
5.10.21
āvābhyāṃ sādhitaṃ putra yathoddiṣṭaṃ ca vedhasā |
śamadamayutābhyāṃ vai śāntiḥ prāptā suniścalā ||
We two accomplished, O son, just as was instructed by the Creator;
endowed with tranquility and self-restraint, firm peace was indeed obtained.
5.10.22
tathāpi gaṇarājasya bhajane niratau purā |
gate varṣe gaṇādhyakṣa āyayau varadāyakaḥ ||
Nevertheless, formerly engaged in the worship of the King of Gaṇas,
when a year had passed, Gaṇādhyakṣa, the bestower of boons, arrived.
5.10.23
taṃ dṛṣṭvā praṇatau devaṃ punaḥ pūjya yathāvidhi |
gaṇeśānaṃ tuṣṭuviva bhaktyā namrātmakandharau ||
Seeing him, we two bowed down to the god, worshipped him again according to rule,
and praised Gaṇeśa with devotion, our necks bowed low.
5.10.24
asitavatsarāvūcatuḥ |
lambodara namastubhyaṃ satataṃ yogarūpiṇe |
yogākāraśarīrāya yogaśāntipradāyine ||
Asita and Vatsara said:
Homage to you, Lambodara, who are ever the embodiment of yoga,
whose body has the form of yoga, who bestow the peace of yoga!
5.10.25
vighneśāya mahābhaktānāṃ vighnaharaṇāya ca |
abhaktānāṃ mahāvighnakāriṇe te namo namaḥ ||
To Vighneśa, who removes the obstacles of great devotees,
and creates great obstacles for non-devotees, homage, homage to you!
5.10.26
khaṃ. 5 a. 10 pāna 21) svānandavāsine tubhyaṃ sadā svānandadāyine |

having the mouse as vehicle, mouse-bannered, homage indeed!
5.10.27
anāthāya gaṇeśāya sarveṣāṃ nātharūpiṇe |
nāthānāṃ nātharūpāya vināyaka namo'stu te ||
To Gaṇeśa who has no master, who has the nature of the master of all,
having the nature of the master of masters, Vināyaka, homage be to you!
5.10.28
herambāya ca sarveṣāṃ mātre pitre namo namaḥ |
jyeṣṭharājāya jyeṣṭhāya jyeṣṭhānāṃ jyeṣṭha te namaḥ ||

To Jyeṣṭharāja, the eldest, O eldest of the eldest, homage to you!
5.10.29
ameyāyā'premayāyā'nantakhelakarāya te |
anantānantarūpāyānantadāya namo namaḥ ||
To the immeasurable, the non-cognizable, who engage in infinite play,
whose forms are infinite and endless, who bestow infinity, homage, homage!
5.10.30
siddhibuddhipate nātha bhaktasaṃrakṣakāya ca |
nānāśaktiprapālāyānantamāyāvihāriṇe ||
O Lord of Siddhi and Buddhi, O Master, protector of devotees,
guardian of various powers, sporting in endless māyā!
5.10.31
gajavaktrāya sarveṣāmādipūjyāya te namaḥ |
sarvapūjyāya sarveṣāṃ siddhidāya namo namaḥ ||
Elephant-faced one, first to be worshipped among all, homage to you!
Worshipped by all, bestower of perfection upon all, homage, homage!
5.10.32
vakratuṇḍāya vīrāya caikadantāya te namaḥ |
mahodarāya devāya devadeveśa te namaḥ ||
To Vakratuṇḍa, the heroic one, and to Ekadanta, homage to you!
To Mahodara, the god, O God of gods, homage to you!
5.10.33
asurāṇāṃ sahāyāya nānāvarapradāya ca |
asurāṇāṃ nihantre ta āsurāya namo namaḥ ||
To the helper of the asuras, who bestow various boons,
and the slayer of the asuras, belonging to the asuras, homage, homage!
5.10.34
brahmaṇāṃ pataye tubhyaṃ brahmaṇāṃ brahmavādine |
brahmākārāya vai ḍhuṇḍhe vedavedyāya te namaḥ ||
To you, the master of Brahmans, the proclaimer of Brahman to Brahmans,
having the form of Brahman, O Ḍhuṇḍhi, to you who are to be known through the Vedas, homage!
5.10.35
manovāṇī vihīnāya manovāṇīmayāya ca |
yogeśāya pareśāya sarvāmayavivarjita ||
To him who is devoid of mind and speech, and who consists of mind and speech,
to the Lord of yoga, the Supreme Lord, O you who are free from all affliction!
5.10.36
kiṃ stuvastvāṃ gaṇādhīśa yatra śāntiṃ samāgatāḥ |
vedā yogīndramukhyāścāstuvantaṃ praṇamāvahe ||
How can we praise you, O Gaṇādhīśa, before whom the Vedas / and the foremost masters of yoga attained silence? We bow to you, praising you not.
5.10.37
evaṃ stuto gaṇādhīśastau jagāda mahāmunī |
varaṃ saṃvṛṇutaṃ viprau dāsyāmi bhaktiyantritaḥ ||
Praised in this way, Gaṇādhīśa spoke to the two great sages: / “Choose a boon, O brahmins! Bound by devotion, I shall grant it.
5.10.38
bhavadbhyāṃ yat kṛtaṃ stotraṃ tadeva me priyaṃ bhavet |
sarvasiddhipradaṃ pūrṇaṃ tathā madbhaktidāyakam ||
May this hymn of praise composed by you two be dear to me; / may it grant all perfections in full and bestow devotion to me.”
5.10.39
evamuktau mahāyogināvūcaturgajānanam |
bhaktiṃ dehi gaṇādhyakṣa tvatpade sudṛḍhāṃ parām ||
Thus addressed, the two great yogins said to Gajānana: / “Grant devotion, O Gaṇādhyakṣa, supremely firm at your feet!

gāṇapatyapriyatvaṃ nau dehi nātha namo'stu te |
nānyaṃ varaṃ gaṇādhīśa vṛṇuvaḥ sukhadaṃ kadā ||
Grant us the state of being dear to Gāṇapatyas, O Lord! Reverence to you! / We will never choose any other pleasure-giving boon, O Gaṇādhīśa.”
5.10.41
tatheti tāvuvācātha gaṇeśoṃ'tardadhe svayam |
āvāṃ bhaktisamāyuktau bhajāvo gaṇanāyakam ||
Saying “So be it” to them, Gaṇeśa himself then vanished. / “Endowed with devotion, we two shall worship Gaṇanāyaka.”
5.10.42
iti te kathitaṃ vatsa jñānaṃ gaṇapatermayā |
śamadamaparo bhūtvā bhaja taṃ gaṇanāyakam ||

evamuktvā'sitastaṃ vai naidhruvaṃ gaṇapasya saḥ |
mantraṃ dadau prajānātha tasmāt ekākṣaraṃ punaḥ ||

tataścāntarhito yogī so'sitaḥ paramārthavit |
gaṇeśaṃ naidhruvastepe tapaḥ sampūjya yatnataḥ ||
Then that yogin Asita, knower of the supreme truth, vanished; / having worshipped Gaṇeśa with effort, Naidhruva performed ascetic penance.
5.10.44.c1
