Mudgala said: / Coming out of the heart of Śeṣa, the leader of the Gaṇas / respectfully took the position of a son, mounted on a mouse.
5.19.2
tata utthāya śeṣastaṃ praṇanāma kṛtāñjaliḥ |
pūjayāmāsa sarveśaṃ punaḥ sa praṇato'bhavat ||
Then, rising up, Śeṣa bowed to him with folded hands; / he worshipped the Lord of all, and bowed down again.
5.19.3
atharvopaniṣadbhistaṃ tuṣṭāva karasampuṭaiḥ |
nāgeśaḥ prārthayāmāsa bhaktinamrātmakandharaḥ ||
With folded hands, he praised him with the Atharva-Upaniṣads; / the lord of serpents made a supplication, bending his neck in devotion:
5.19.4
śeṣa uvāca |
yogeśastvaṃ gaṇādhyakṣa brahmaṇāṃ nāyakaḥ smṛtaḥ |
kathaṃ me putrabhāvena saṃsthito'si viḍambanam ||
Śeṣa said: / "You are the lord of yoga, O Gaṇādhyakṣa, traditionally remembered as the leader of the Brahmans; / why do you take the position of a son to me? It is a mockery!"
5.19.5
tato gajānanastaṃ vai mohayāmāsa māyayā |
mohito nāgarājastaṃ putraṃ mene gajānanam ||
Then Gajānana indeed deluded him by means of māyā; / deluded, the serpent king regarded Gajānana as his son.
5.19.6
śeṣaḥ sastrīka āgṛhya lālayāmāsa bālakam |
krameṇa pañcavarṣastho babhūve tadgṛhe prabhuḥ ||
Together with his wife, Śeṣa received and fondled the child; / gradually the Lord became five years old in his house.
5.19.7
atha śṛṇu prajānātha vṛttāntaṃ daityasambhavam |
māyākarāsuro duṣṭaścakāra karmakhaṇḍanam ||
Now hear, O lord of creatures, the account born of the Daitya: / the wicked Māyākarāsura brought about the destruction of ritual acts.
5.19.8
āsuraṃ karma sarvatra kṛtaṃ tena durātmanā |
tenopoṣaṇasaṃyuktā babhūvurdevanāyakāḥ ||
Demonic action was performed everywhere by that wicked soul; / because of that, the leaders of the gods were afflicted with fasting.
5.19.9
tato hāhākṛtaṃ sarvairvarṇāśramayutairjanaiḥ |
na svāhā na svadhādyaṃ vai kartuṃ kenā'pi śakyate ||
Then an outcry was made by all the people belonging to the castes and stages of life: / "Neither *svāhā* nor *svadhā* and the rest can be performed by anyone at all!"
5.19.10
tato munivarāḥ sarve devāḥ śambhupurogamāḥ |
vicāraṃ daityanāśārthaṃ cakrurbhayasamanvitāḥ ||
Then all the best sages and the gods, led by Śambhu, / filled with fear, deliberated for the sake of the destruction of the Daitya.
5.19.10.p1
tatrovāca mahāyogī bṛhaspatirudāradhīḥ |
(
There the great yogin Bṛhaspati of noble intellect spoke: / (
5.19.11
khaṃ. 5 a. 19 pāna 41) gaṇeśaṃ bhaktisaṃyuktā bhajadhvaṃ padaprāptaye ||
Khaṇḍa 5, Adhyāya 19, page 41) "Filled with devotion, worship Gaṇeśa for the attainment of your status!
5.19.12
catuḥpadārthasaṃyoge gaṇeśo nijabodhakaḥ |
caturbhirvarjitaścā'yaṃ haniṣyati mahākhalam ||
When the four objects of life are combined, Gaṇeśa is the awakener of one's true nature; / and devoid of these four, he will slay the greatly wicked one."
5.19.13
śrutvā te gurusaṃyuktāstapastepurmahat prabho |
nirāhārādisaṃyuktā nānā'nuṣṭhānatatparāḥ ||
Having heard, they, united with their guru, performed great austerities, O lord, / endowed with abstention from food and the like, intent upon diverse religious observances.
5.19.14
gate varṣaśate pūrṇe prasanno'bhūd gajānanaḥ |
āyayau tān varān dātuṃ bhaktyā tuṣṭo mahāyaśāḥ ||
When a full hundred years had passed, Gajānana became pleased; / satisfied by their devotion, the highly renowned one came to grant them boons.
5.19.15
taṃ dṛṣṭvā harṣasaṃyuktā devā munaya ādarāt |
praṇemuḥ pūjayāmāsustuṣṭuvurvividhaiḥ stavaiḥ ||
Seeing him, the gods and sages, filled with joy, respectfully / bowed down, worshipped him, and praised him with diverse hymns of praise.
5.19.16
varayāmāsurādṛtya gaṇeśaṃ sarvanāyakam |
daityaṃ jahi gaṇādhyakṣa prabho māyākarāsuram ||
Respectfully, they chose Gaṇeśa, the leader of all, as their boongiver: / "Slay the Daitya Māyākarāsura, O Gaṇādhyakṣa, O lord!
5.19.17
tathā māyāvihīnāṃ vai bhaktiṃ dehi tvadīyakām |
dāsāste pādapadmasya vayaṃ sarve na saṃśayaḥ ||
Likewise, grant your devotion that is devoid of Māyā; / we are all the servants of your lotus feet, without doubt."
5.19.18
śrutvā tān gaṇarājastu jagāda harṣasaṃyutaḥ |
māyākaraṃ haniṣyāmi śeṣaputro'hamañjasā ||
Having heard them, the king of Gaṇas, filled with joy, said: / "I shall swiftly slay Māyākara as the son of Śeṣa.
5.19.19
yadi me vāhanaṃ tatra mukhyaṃ bhavati devapāḥ |
caturdevamayaṃ viprāstadā''rohaṃ karomyaham ||
If my foremost mount there is composed of the four gods, / O guardians of the gods, O Brahmins, then I shall mount it.
5.19.20
madīyā bhaktirugrā vo bhaviṣyati tu niścitam |
sudṛḍhā me sadā dāsā bhaviṣyatha viśeṣataḥ ||
Devotion to me will surely become intense for you; / especially, you shall always be my very firm servants."
5.19.21
evamuktvāṃ'tardadhe'sau gaṇeśo devanāyakaḥ |
śeṣadhyānāt samudbhūto bhaktānāṃ kāryasiddhaye ||
Having spoken thus, that Gaṇeśa, the leader of the gods, vanished, / he who had arisen from the meditation of Śeṣa for the success of his devotees' tasks.
5.19.22
atho devarṣimukhyāste vicāraṃ cakrurañjasā |
caturdevamayaṃ tasya vāhanaṃ kīdṛśaṃ bhavet ||
Then those chiefs of gods and sages immediately considered: / "Of what nature should his mount be, which is composed of the four gods?"
5.19.23
sarvāṃstatra śivaḥ sākṣāduktavān vākyamuttamam |
vedamūrtimayo devaḥ sarveṣāṃ gururañjasā ||
To all of them there, Śiva in person spoke an excellent statement, / the god who embodies the Veda, truly the guru of all.
5.19.24
śiva uvāca |
ayaṃ mūṣakavāhaśca vedeṣu kathito'bhavat |
mūṣasteye tathā dhāturjñātavyaḥ steyabahmadhṛk ||
Śiva said: / "This mouse-mount has been spoken of in the Vedas; / the verbal root *mūṣ* means 'to steal', and it should be known as holding the thief-Brahman.
5.19.25
nāmarūpātmakaṃ sarvaṃ tatrā'sadbrahma vartate |
nāmarūpeṣu ye bhogāsteṣāṃ bhoktā svamāyayā ||
Everything consists of name and form; there the unreal Brahman abides. / Through his own Māyā, he is the experiencer of those experiences in name and form.
5.19.26
bhogeṣu bhogabhoktā yastadākāreṇa vartate |
ahaṅkārayutāste vai na jānanti vimohitāḥ ||
He who is the experiencer of experiences within experiences exists in their form. / Those who are endowed with egoism, utterly deluded, do not know:
5.19.27
vayaṃ bhoktāra evaṃ te mānayanti viśeṣataḥ |
īśvaraḥ sarvabhoktā ca cauryavṛttiṣu saṃsthitaḥ ||
'We are indeed the experiencers'—thus they especially consider. / But Īśvara is the enjoyer of all, abiding in tendencies toward theft.
5.19.28
sa eva mūṣakaḥ prokto manujānāṃ pracālakaḥ |
māyayā gūḍharūpo bhogān bhunakti sa coravat ||
He alone is called the mouse, the impeller of humans; / hidden in form by Māyā, he enjoys experiences like a thief.
5.19.29
tadvajjīvanago devaḥ sūrya ātmā viśeṣataḥ |
nānā jīveṣu bhogān bhunakti vai cauravat svayam ||
In the same way, the sun, the soul, the god presiding over the life-principle, especially / himself enjoys experiences within diverse living beings, like a thief.
5.19.30
sameṣu sarvabhoktā ca viṣṇustadvanna saṃśayaḥ |
sadasanmayarūpaśca cauravan māyayā prabhuḥ ||
In the same way, Viṣṇu is the enjoyer of all among equal things, no doubt; / and the lord, possessing a form consisting of being and non-being, [enjoys] like a thief through Māyā.
5.19.31
sahajeṣu tathā devaḥ śivo bhoktā turīyagaḥ |
cauravannā'tra sandeho yuto nirmohamāyayā ||
Likewise, among innate things, the god Śiva, abiding in the fourth state, is the experiencer, / like a thief, without doubt here, joined with Māyā that is free from delusion.
5.19.32
bhoktāraṃ caurabhāvasthaṃ vāhanaṃ kuruta priyāḥ |
mūṣakākṛtirūpaṃ vai dīyatāṃ gaṇapāya tat ||
Make the experiencer, who abides in the state of a thief, the mount, O dear ones! / Indeed, let that form having the appearance of a mouse be given to the lord of Gaṇas."
5.19.33
śrutvā te harṣitāḥ sarve śivaṃ devarṣayo'bruvan |
sādhu sādhu tvayā proktaṃ sarvajñastvaṃ sadāśiva ||
Having heard, all those gods and sages, delighted, said to Śiva: / "Well said, well said by you! You are omniscient, O Sadāśiva!"
5.19.34
tato gaṇeśvaraṃ dhyātvā caturbhiḥ kalpitaṃ vapuḥ |
tatra svāṃśaṃ dadurdevā bhoktṛrūpaṃ prajāpate ||
Then, having meditated on the lord of Gaṇas, a body was fashioned by the four; / there the gods bestowed their own portion in the form of the experiencer, O lord of creatures.
5.19.35
tadaṃśena sajīvo'bhūna mūṣako balasaṃyutaḥ |
brahmā devarṣibhiḥ sārdhamabhiṣekaṃ cakāra ha ||
By that portion, a living, mighty mouse came into being. / Brahmā, along with the divine sages, performed the consecration.
5.19.35.p1
antarbāhyādikaṃ steyaṃ paraṃ sarvatra vartate |
(
Stealing is internal, external, and so forth, yet it exists supreme everywhere; / (
5.19.36
khaṃ. 5 a. 19 pāna 42) nānāvidhaṃ tathaikaṃ ca teṣu rājā'yamucyate ||
Khaṇḍa 5, Adhyāya 19, page 42) it is manifold and also single; among these, this [mouse] is called the king.
5.19.37
abhiṣiktaḥ svayaṃ tatra mūṣako harṣito'bhavat |
yajñabhāgasya bhoktā'sau kṛto devaiḥ savāsavaiḥ ||

5.19.38
saṅgṛhya sarvadevāstaṃ munayaḥ śeṣamandiram |
ājagmustān samālokya śeṣaśca vismito'bhavat ||

5.19.39
pūjayāmāsa sarvān sa nāgarājo mahāyaśāḥ |
nānā''saneṣu saṃsthāpya punastān pratyuvāca ha ||
The highly renowned king of serpents worshipped them all; / seating them on various seats, he spoke back to them:
5.19.40
śeṣa uvāca |
dhanyaṃ me janma dānaṃ vai tapo jñānaṃ svabhāvajam |
pitaro munayo devā darśanādbhavatāṃ kila ||
Śeṣa said: / "Blessed indeed is my birth, my gift, my austerity, and my innate knowledge, / and blessed are my ancestors, O sages and gods, on account of seeing you!
5.19.41
kimarthamāgatāḥ sarve vadata māṃ surarṣayaḥ |
bhavatāṃ kṛpayā yuktaḥ kariṣyāmi subhaktitaḥ ||
For what purpose have you all come? Tell me, O divine sages! / Endowed with your grace, I will perform it with good devotion."
5.19.42
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā śaṅkaraḥ sarvanāyakaḥ |
jagāda nāgarājaṃ taṃ harṣayan harṣavardhanaḥ ||
Hearing that speech of his, Śaṅkara, the leader of all, / the increaser of joy, spoke to that king of serpents, gladdening him.
5.19.43
śiva uvāca |
śeṣa śeṣa mahābhāga dhanyastvaṃ sarvamaṇḍale |
tava putratvamāpanno brahmaṇāṃ nāyakaḥ prabho ||
Śiva said: / "O Śeṣa, O Śeṣa of great fortune, you are blessed in the whole realm! / The leader of the Brahmans has attained the status of your son, O lord.
5.19.44
mūṣakago'vatāro'yaṃ pañcavarṣavayonvitaḥ |
mā putraṃ taṃ vijānīhi tapasā dhyānajaṃ prabhum ||
This incarnation who rides a mouse is five years of age; / do not consider the lord, born from meditation through austerity, to be merely your son.
5.19.45
tasyedaṃ vāhanaṃ mukhyaṃ caturdevakalāṃśajam |
steyadharmadharaṃ pūrṇaṃ sarveṣāṃ hṛdi vartate ||
This foremost mount of his is born from portions of the four gods' parts; / bearing the nature of stealing, it resides completely in the hearts of all.
5.19.46
asyopari samāruhya mūṣakagaḥ pratāpavān |
māyākarāsuraṃ sadyo haniṣyati gaṇeśvaraḥ ||
Having mounted upon this, the mighty one who rides a mouse, / the lord of Gaṇas, will instantly slay the demon Māyākara."
5.19.47
evaṃ teṣāṃ vacaḥ śrutvā khedayuktaḥ sa nāgarāṭ |
na kiñcit sañjagau devān putravatsalabhāvataḥ ||
Having thus heard their speech, that king of serpents, filled with sorrow, / said nothing to the gods on account of his affectionate feeling for his son.
5.19.48
tatastaṃ śaṅkaro deva uvāca vacanaṃ punaḥ |
mā khedaṃ kuru kalyāṇa vighnahā na mariṣyati ||
Then the god Śaṅkara again spoke a word to him: / "Do not grieve, O auspicious one! The destroyer of obstacles will not die.

tapobhirvividhairdevaiḥ munibhiḥ prārthito'bhavat |
māyākaravināśāya tava putro gajānanaḥ ||
By the gods and sages through diverse austerities, your son Gajānana / was petitioned for the destruction of Māyākara.

tvayā''dau tapasā deva ārādhito gajānanaḥ |
varadānaprabhāveṇa tava putro babhūva ha ||
Previously, the god Gajānana was worshipped by you through austerity; / by the power of the granting of a boon, he indeed became your son."
5.19.51
etasminnantare mūṣakagastatra samāgataḥ |
nāgabālairmahābhāgaiḥ krīḍāyukto gajānanaḥ ||
Meanwhile, Gajānana, he who rides a mouse, arrived there, / engaged in play with the noble serpent children.
5.19.52
samuttasthuḥ praṇemustaṃ dṛṣṭvā viprāḥ sadevapāḥ |

māyākarasya duṣṭasya kathaṃ kāryaṃ mayā surāḥ ||
