6.32.p1
śrīgaṇeśāya namaḥ ||
Salutations to the glorious Gaṇeśa.
6.32.1
śaktaya ūcuḥ |
kāmāsuravadhārthāya bhaktiyuktā gajānanam |
devarṣayaḥ prārthayanto niḥkāmāḥ kathamapyaho ||
The Śaktis said: / "For the purpose of slaying Kāmāsura, the divine sages, filled with devotion, / prayed to Gajānana; how, oh, did they become desireless?"
6.32.2
ādiśaktiruvāca |
atho sakāmaniḥkāmamārgaṃ vakṣyāmi śaktayaḥ |
śṛṇudhvaṃ bhāvasaṃyuktāḥ saṃśayacchedanāya tam ||
The Ādiśakti said: / Now, O Śaktis, I shall proclaim the path with desire and without desire; / listen to it with devotion so as to sever your doubt.
6.32.3
svadehapoṣaṇādyarthaṃ yaśorthaṃ bhāvasaṃyutāḥ |
bhajante kāmasaṃyuktā devaṃ jānīta tānnarān ||
Those who, full of desire, worship God with emotional attachment / for the nourishment of their own bodies and the like, or for renown—know them to be [sakāma] people.
6.32.4
svasvadharmaprasiddhyarthaṃ devasevārthameva ye |
niḥkāmāste bhajante taṃ devaṃ bhāvasamanvitāḥ ||
Those who, free from desire and endowed with devotion, worship that God / solely for the fulfillment of their own respective dharma and for the service of God—they are desireless.
6.32.5
niḥkāmikā kṛtā bhaktirdeveśaiḥ śṛṇuta priyāḥ |
tasyāścihnaṃ pravakṣyāmi bhavatī hitakāmyayā ||
Listen, O dear ones, to the desireless devotion performed by the lords of the gods; / I shall describe its characteristic mark out of a wish for your welfare.
6.32.6
sṛṣṭisthitilayādyarthaṃ nirmitā vidhimukhyakāḥ |
vayaṃ tadeva sevā te khelasi tvaṃ gajānana ||
"Brahmā and the foremost [gods] were created for the sake of creation, maintenance, and dissolution; / we are that very service to you. You are at play, O Gajānana!
6.32.7
hṛdi sthitvā ca sarveṣāṃ bhogāṃstvaṃ doṣavarjitaḥ |
bhuṅkṣe tena gaṇeśāna sevā te dehapoṣikā ||
Remaining in the heart of all, free from fault, you enjoy the objects of experience; / therefore, O Gaṇeśa, service to you nourishes the body.
6.32.8
tava prītyarthamānandāt prakurmaḥ svasvadharmajām |
kriyāṃ sṛṣṭyādikāṃ nātha tadarthaṃ prārthayāmahe ||
For your pleasure we joyfully perform the action born of our own respective dharma, / such as creation, O Lord; for that purpose we pray [to you].
6.32.9
adhunā daityamukhyena sevā te khaṇḍitā parā |
asamarthāṃśca tāṃ kartuṃ rakṣa naḥ sevanotsukān ||
Now our supreme service to you has been broken by the chief of the Daityas; / protect us, who are unable to perform it and eager to serve!"
6.32.10
evaṃ samprārthito devairvikaṭo nātra saṃśayaḥ |
dehabhogādibhāveṣu yaśaḥ svapya spṛhātmabhiḥ ||
Thus was Vikaṭa prayed to by the gods—there is no doubt here— / by those who had no longing for bodily enjoyment and the like, nor even for renown.
6.32.11
svadharmasaṃyutaiḥ sarvaiḥ svasvavyāpārajā kriyā |
kartavyā ḍhuṇḍhiprītyarthaṃ niḥkāmā sā matā kila ||
By all who are endowed with their own dharma, the action arising from their respective duties / is to be performed for the pleasure of Ḍhuṇḍhi; that indeed is considered desireless.
6.32.12
adhunā prakṛtaṃ devyo mahacchṛṇuta ceṣṭitam |
vikaṭasya viśeṣeṇa yena bhaktiḥ pralabhyate ||
Now, O goddesses, hear the great ongoing deed / of Vikaṭa in particular, by which devotion is attained.
6.32.13
kumbhakarṇādayaḥ sarve jagmurbhayasamanvitāḥ |
kāmāsuraṃ mahāvīryaṃ vṛttāntaṃ taṃ nyavedayan ||
Kumbhakarṇa and all the others went, filled with fear, / to the immensely heroic Kāmāsura and reported that event:
6.32.14
mayūreśaḥ samāyāto vikaṭaśceti kathyate |
devaiḥ samprārthito nātha haniṣyati mahāsurān ||
"Mayūreśa has arrived, and he is called Vikaṭa; / prayed to by the gods, O Lord, he will slay the great asuras.
6.32.15
tasya dṛṣṭinipātena devāstejoyutāḥ kṛtāḥ |
vayaṃ tejovihīnāśca paśyāścaryaṃ mahāmate ||
By the fall of his gaze the gods have been filled with splendor, / while we have been stripped of splendor. Behold this wonder, O wise one!
6.32.16
śaraṇaṃ vikaṭaṃ caiva śubhadaṃ te bhaviṣyati |
anyathā'surasaṅghānāṃ vināśo niścito'dhunā ||
Taking refuge in Vikaṭa will bring you good fortune; / otherwise the destruction of the hosts of asuras is certain now."
6.32.17
kumbhakarṇavacaḥ śrutvā krodhayukto baliśca tam |
nirbhartsya pratyuvācedaṃ vacanaṃ sarvasannidhau ||
Hearing Kumbhakarṇa's words, Bali was filled with rage; / reproaching him, he spoke these words in the presence of all:
6.32.18
baliruvāca |
kiṃ bhrānto'si viśeṣeṇa vadase vikalo yathā |
kāmāsurasya vegaṃ tu sahate kaḥ svarūpadhṛk ||
Bali said:
"Why are you so deluded, that you speak like one who is distraught? / What embodied being can withstand the onslaught of Kāmāsura?"
6.32.19
khaṃ. 6 a. 33 pāna 94) balervacanamākarṇyāsuraḥ kāmaḥ pratāpavān |
jagāda daityamukhyāṃśca hṛdayena vidūyatā ||
Hearing Bali's words, the powerful asura Kāma, / with a grieving heart, spoke to the foremost Daityas:
6.32.20
kāmāsura uvāca |
vāṇī satyā babhūvāpi svasthā me śatrurāgataḥ |
haniṣyāmi mariṣyāmi kiṃ vā tatra bhaviṣyati ||
Kāmāsura said:
"The voice has proven true; my enemy has arrived while I was at peace. / Shall I slay him, or shall I die? What will happen there?"
6.32.21
kāmāsuravacaḥ śrutvā durmadastatra cābravīt |
vacanaṃ tejasā yukto vīryayuktaṃ mahāsuraḥ ||
Hearing Kāmāsura's words, Durmada, the great asura, / filled with splendor and heroic vigor, spoke these words:
6.32.22
durmada uvāca |
kumbhakarṇena dṛṣṭaśca vikaṭo nātra saṃśayaḥ |
utpattināśasaṃyukto vicāraya mahāmate ||
Durmada said:
"Vikaṭa was seen by Kumbhakarṇa, of that there is no doubt; / yet he is subject to origination and destruction—consider this, O wise one!
6.32.23
yad dṛṣṭaṃ tatpraṇaṣṭaṃ vai paśya vede vicakṣaṇa |
kathaṃ tvāṃ sa mahārāja haniṣyati varairyutam ||
Whatever is seen indeed perishes; see this, O expert in the Veda! / How can he slay you, O great king, who are endowed with boons?
6.32.24
mā cintāṃ kuru rājendra vadhiṣyāmo vayaṃ ca te |
śatruṃ tatra jayairyuktā bhaviṣyāmo na saṃśayaḥ ||
Do not worry, O king of kings! We shall slay your enemy, / and endowed with victories we will be victorious there, of that there is no doubt.
6.32.25
ajñāpaya mahādaityāsmāṃste pādasya kiṅkarān |
paśya no yat mahāvīryaṃ devanāśakaraṃ param ||
Command us, O great Daitya, servants of your feet! / Behold our great valor, which brings about the supreme destruction of the gods.
6.32.26
devairmāyā kṛtā ceyaṃ khavāṇī bhayarūpiṇī |
māyayā taṃ vinirmāya bhayārthaṃ daityarakṣasām ||
This terrifying voice from the sky was an illusion fabricated by the gods, / having created him through illusion to cause fear in the Daityas and Rākṣasas.
6.32.27
neyamākāśavāṇī vai vicāraya mahāmate |
dehadhārī kathaṃ tvāṃ sa haniṣyati mahābalam ||
This was surely no voice from the sky; consider this, O wise one! / How can an embodied being slay you, who possess great strength?"
6.32.28
durmadasya vacaḥ śrutvā balimukhyā mahā'surāḥ |
harṣayuktāḥ punastaṃ te jaguḥ satyaṃ tvayoditam ||
Hearing Durmada's words, the great asuras headed by Bali, / filled with joy, said to him again: "You have spoken the truth."
6.32.29
tataḥ kāmāsuraścaiva sannaddhaḥ sarvadaityapaiḥ |
caturaṅgabalairyuktairnirjagāma gajānanam ||
Then Kāmāsura, equipped by all the chiefs of the Daityas / accompanied by their fourfold armies, marched out toward Gajānana.
6.32.30
tataḥ śukreṇa daityendro bodhito bahuloktibhiḥ |
na bubodha madotsikto balagarveṇa mohitaḥ ||
Then, though instructed by Śukra with many words, / the lord of the Daityas, arrogant with intoxication and bewildered by the pride of strength, did not heed.
6.32.31
bhāvinaṃ munimukhyaśca jñātvā kāvyo mahāyaśāḥ |
kālavegaṃ samāśritya prayayau tamanu prabhuḥ ||
Knowing what was destined, Kāvya, the renowned foremost sage, / resigning himself to the power of time, the master followed after him.
6.32.32
daityāḥ krodhayutāḥ sarve samājagmuḥ praharṣitāḥ |
devamardanakāmārthaṃ yatra devāḥ sthitāḥ purā ||
All the Daityas, filled with wrath and highly elated, / marched to crush the gods to the place where the gods formerly stood.
6.32.32.c1
oṃ tatsaditi śrīmadāntye purāṇopaniṣadi śrīmanmaudgale mahāpurāṇe ṣaṣṭhe khaṇḍe vikaṭacarite devadaityasamāgamo nāma dvātriṃśattamo'dhyāyaḥ ||
