śrīgaṇeśāya namaḥ ||
Obeisance to the glorious Gaṇeśa.
8.11.1
śiva uvāca |
ekadā saṃsthitaṃ viprāḥ kailāse girijāyutam |
gaṇeśaṃ bhajamānaṃ māṃ dṛṣṭvā nandī samabravīt ||
Śiva said: / Once, O brāhmaṇas, Nandī, seeing me residing on Kailāsa accompanied by Girijā / and worshiping Gaṇeśa, spoke:
8.11.2
nandyuvāca |
śiva tvaṃ sarvarūpaśca sarvasvena prakīrtitaḥ |
sarvebhyaḥ phaladātā vai karmaṇāṃ karmadhārakaḥ ||
Nandī said: / O Śiva, you have all forms, and you are proclaimed as the all in all. / You are indeed the giver of the fruits of actions to all, the sustainer of deeds.
8.11.3
yogibhyo yoganāthastvaṃ yogasiddhipradāyakaḥ |
tvattaḥ parataraṃ nāsti bhajase kaṃ gajānanam ||
To yogins you are the lord of yoga, the bestower of the perfections of yoga. / There is none higher than you; what Gajānana do you worship?
8.11.4
vede śivasutaḥ prokto gaṇeśo nātra saṃśayaḥ |
taṃ kathaṃ bhajase nātha svaputraṃ svāminaṃ yathā ||
In the Veda, Gaṇeśa is called the son of Śiva; of this there is no doubt. / Why, O Lord, do you worship him, your own son, as if he were your master?
8.11.5
īśaste nāma vikhyātaṃ sarveśatvāt sadāśivaḥ |
taveśo naiva vedeṣu tvamekaḥ sarvabhāvanaḥ ||
Your name is renowned as “Lord” because of being the lord of all, Sadāśiva. / You have no lord in the Vedas; you alone are the source of all existence.
8.11.6
kiṃ mohārthaṃ janānāṃ ca pārvatyā saha śaṅkara |
bhajase gaṇanāthaṃ tvaṃ śaivaguptatvakāraṇāt ||
Is it for the delusion of people, O Śaṅkara, along with Pārvatī, / that you worship the lord of gaṇas, for the sake of concealing your Śiva-nature?
8.11.7
mā kuruṣva vṛthā svāmin gaṇeśabhajanaṃ kadā |
śaivānāṃ mohadaṃ deva vyabhicārapadapradam ||
Do not ever perform worship of Gaṇeśa in vain, O master! / It causes delusion among Śaivas, O god, and leads to an improper state.
8.11.8
mudgala uvāca |
nandino vākyamākarṇya tamuvāca sadāśivaḥ |
harṣeṇotphullanetraśca mahāpāśupataṃ param ||
Mudgala said: / Hearing Nandī's words, Sadāśiva, / his eyes blossoming with joy, spoke to him, the supreme Mahāpāśupata:
8.11.9
śrīśiva uvāca |
na jānāsi gaṇeśānaṃ nandistvaṃ matparāyaṇaḥ |
tasyā'haṃ gaṇarūpaśca paśya vede vicakṣaṇa ||
The glorious Śiva said: / You do not know the lord Gaṇeśa, Nandī, though you are devoted to me. / I am a gaṇa of his; look in the Veda, O wise one!
8.11.10
gaṇāḥ samūharūpāścānantāstasya mahātmanaḥ |
īśānāṃ vai samūhe'haṃ gaṇo gaṇapateḥ smṛtaḥ ||
The gaṇas of that great soul are of the nature of multitudes and are endless. / Among the multitude of lords, I am considered a gaṇa of the lord of gaṇas.
8.11.11
eka eva gaṇeśānaḥ sarve tasya gaṇāḥ smṛtāḥ |
brahmākārāśca viśvākārā brahmeśasya mānada ||
There is only one lord Gaṇeśa; all are considered his gaṇas, / having the form of Brahman and having the form of the universe, of the lord of Brahman, O giver of honor!
8.11.11.p1
vidyā nānātmikā proktā tasyā nānāvidhāḥ smṛtāḥ |
(
Wisdom is said to be manifold, and manifold forms are remembered of it, / (
8.11.12
khaṃ. 8 a. 11 pāna 25) samutpannā viśeṣeṇa vidyā jñānaprakāśakāḥ ||
Khaṇḍa 8, Adhyāya 11, page 25) which have arisen particularly as the wisdoms that reveal knowledge.
8.11.13
vidyādhīśo'hamekaśca kathito vedavādibhiḥ |
yogavidyāṃ mayā''śritya gaṇeśaḥ prakaṭīkṛtaḥ ||
I alone am called the lord of wisdom by the knowers of the Veda. / Having resorted to the wisdom of yoga, Gaṇeśa was manifested by me.
8.11.14
samādhijaṃ paraṃ brahma tadeva putra ucyate |
ataḥ samādhijo yo me gaṇeśaḥ putratāṃ yayau ||
The supreme Brahman born of samādhi is called the son; / therefore Gaṇeśa, who was born of my samādhi, attained sonship.
8.11.15
vidyayā jñānasaṃyuktā anye viṣṇumukhā'marāḥ |
na te vidyādhipāḥ proktā macchiṣyā nātra saṃśayaḥ ||
Other gods, headed by Viṣṇu, are endowed with knowledge through wisdom; / they are not proclaimed lords of wisdom, they are my disciples, no doubt.
8.11.16
taiśca yogabalenaiva gaṇeśaḥ prakaṭīkṛtaḥ |
samādhijaḥ sutasteṣāṃ babhūve yogināṃ tathā ||
And by them, solely through the power of yoga, Gaṇeśa was manifested; / born of samādhi, he also became the son of those yogins.
8.11.17
ādau mayā kṛtaṃ brahma sākṣātkāri guruṃ vinā |
vidyābalena tasmāttu mukhyo'haṃ viśvapo guruḥ ||
In the beginning, Brahman was directly perceived by me without a guru / through the power of wisdom; therefore, I am the chief, the protector of the universe, the guru.
8.11.18
ataḥ śivasutaḥ prokto vedeṣu gaṇanāyakaḥ |
viṣṇvādayo na mukhyāśca gaṇeśapitaraḥ smṛtāḥ ||
Therefore, in the Vedas, the lord of gaṇas is said to be the son of Śiva. / Viṣṇu and others are not remembered as the primary fathers of Gaṇeśa.
8.11.19
ato'haṃ yogarūpaṃ taṃ brahmeśaṃ brahmavanditam |
bhajāmi svāminaṃ dāso naiva mohārthamādarāt ||

bimbabhāvaṃ parityajya gaṇeśo jāyate naraḥ ||

8.11.24
sarasaṃ cittamutsṛjya yogivandyo bhaviṣyasi |
ekākṣaravidhānena bhaja taṃ yogasādhanaiḥ ||
Relinquishing the passionate mind, you will become praised by yogins. / Worship him through the means of yoga, according to the rule of the single-syllable [mantra].
8.11.25
evamuktvā dadau tasmai mantramekākṣaraṃ param |
savidhiṃ so'pi taṃ natvā taporthī ca yayau vanam ||
Having spoken thus, he gave him that supreme single-syllable mantra / along with the ritual rule. He too, having bowed to him and desiring asceticism, went to the forest.
8.11.26
nirāhāreṇa tapasā''rādhito dviradānanaḥ |
nandinā dhyānayuktena samādhinā viśeṣataḥ ||

8.11.27
gate varṣaśate pūrṇe yogīndraḥ sa babhūva ca |
varadātā gaṇeśānastadāśramapadaṃ yayau ||

8.11.28
āgataṃ gaṇanāthaṃ sa dṛṣṭvā harṣasamanvitaḥ |
utthāya taṃ praṇamyā''dau pūjayāmāsa bhaktitaḥ ||

8.11.29
punaḥ praṇamya vighneśaṃ stotuṃ samupacakrame |
pārvatīṃ vāmamāge vai dadhataṃ vīkṣya vismitaḥ ||
Having bowed once more to Vighneśa, he undertook to praise him, / astonished upon seeing him holding Pārvatī on his left side.
8.11.30
gaṇeśakṛpayā sadyo jñānaṃ prāptaṃ mahādbhutam |
tena sarvaṃ gaṇeśasya ceṣṭitaṃ jñātamādarāt ||
By the grace of Gaṇeśa, most wondrous knowledge was immediately attained. / Through that, all the sport of Gaṇeśa was reverently known.
8.11.31
tataḥ sa nandikeśāno vicāramakarot hṛdi |
bāhyarūpadharaścāyaṃ mahādevo na saṃśayaḥ ||
Then that lord Nandī reflected in his heart: / “He who bears an external form is indeed Mahādeva, of this there is no doubt.
8.11.32
girijāyāḥ patiḥ proktaḥ pañcavaktrādicihnitaḥ |
trinetro naradehākhyo bhinnabhāvapradarśakaḥ ||
He is proclaimed the husband of Girijā, marked with five faces and the rest, / three-eyed, having a human body, demonstrating distinct states.

ānandātmakarūpā sā pārvatī viṣṇurūpiṇī |
śivadevamayī proktā tasyāmātmā śivaḥ smṛtaḥ ||
