100.1

Śrī Mārkaṇḍeya said: / Then, O protector of the earth, one should go to the exceedingly charming pilgrimage place / known as Mārkaṇḍeśa on the southern bank of the Narmadā,

100.2

the highest of all pilgrimage places, auspicious, praised by the gods, / more secret than the secret, O son, not told to anyone by me.

100.3

It was established formerly by me, resembling a stairway to heaven; / right there knowledge arose in me through the grace of Śaṅkara.

100.4

Whoever else, having gone right there, recites the Drupadā verse in the water, / he is completely freed from all sins, O son of Pāṇḍu,

100.5

from sins born of speech, of mind, or of actions. / And holding onto the pedestal, facing the southern direction,

100.6

one should attach oneself with devotion to the Trident-bearer having thirty-two multiform aspects; / at the fall of the body, he goes to Śiva—this is my conclusion, O king.

100.7

One should kindle a lamp with clarified butter at night on the eighth [tithi], O Bhārata; / he attains the heavenly world—thus indeed did Śaṅkara declare.

100.8

Whoever performs a śrāddha right there with devotion, O son of the king, / his ancestors are satisfied until the destruction of all elements.

100.9

Whoever offers libations there to his ancestors with ingudī fruits, jujubes, bilva fruits, unbroken grain, or water, / attains the fruit of life.
