138.1
The venerable Mārkaṇḍeya said:
Then one should proceed, O son of Pāṇḍu, to the unsurpassed Śakratīrtha, / where the illustrious king of the gods, Śatakratu, attained perfection.
138.2
Knowing that the lord of the gods had formerly been cursed by Gautama, the gods, / all the deities led by Brahmā and the sages whose wealth is austerity,
138.3
Entreated Gautama with propitiatory, auspicious words / on behalf of Śakra, who had lost his kingdom and lost his majesty, O lord of sages:
138.4
‘No one desires a kingdom deprived of Indra, O twice-born, / whether god or human; this is known to you, O lord.
138.5
Show mercy upon him who is covered with vulvas, O best of the twice-born; / Śakra has vanished from sight, corrupted by his own sin.’
138.6
Having heard the words of the gods, Gautama, foremost of knowers of the Veda, / agreed, saying ‘So be it,’ and proceeded to grant a boon to Śakra:
138.7
‘This thousand of vulvas that previously arose, O Śatakratu, / that will become a thousand eyes through my favor.’
138.8
Addressed thus, the thousand-eyed one bowed to the best of sages / and to those illustrious brāhmaṇas, and then went towards the Narmadā.
138.9
Having bathed in the pure water and installed the destroyer of Tripura, / he went to the abode of the thirty [gods], praised by hosts of apsarases.
138.10
He who, having bathed at that pilgrimage place, worships the supreme lord, / that man is released from the sin of approaching another man’s wife.
