140.1
Mārkaṇḍeya said:
Then one should go, O great king, to the unsurpassed pool of Nandā,
where the highly fortunate goddess Nandā, bestower of boons, attained perfection.
140.2
Formerly, when Mahiṣāsura, of immense body, terrible to the gods,
foremost of the Dānavas, had his limbs pierced with a trident by the trident-wielding goddess—
140.3
by whom the eleven Rudras, the Ādityas along with the hosts of Maruts,
the Vasus along with Vāyu, the moon and the sun, O lord of the gods,
140.4
and Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Maheśvara were conquered by that mighty one
in an exceedingly terrible battle that caused terror to the gods—
140.5
after performing that dread slaughter, the goddess Nandā, ruler of the gods,
the large-eyed one, bathed [there]; therefore it is known as Nandāhrada.
140.6
Whoever bathes at that pilgrimage place, O descendant of Bharata, and dedicated to Nandā
makes a gift to Brahmins, he obtains the fruit of a horse sacrifice.
140.7
Bhairava and Kedāra, and likewise Rudra and Mahālaya:
Nandāhrada is the fourth; a fifth is difficult to find on earth.
140.8
Possessed by desire and passion, many do not know it,
this holy pool of the Narmadā, destroyer of all sins.
140.9
Whoever bathes at that pilgrimage place and worships the goddess Nandā,
what need is there for him to journey into the midst of the Himālaya?
140.10
Not knowing the supreme truth, enveloped in darkness, they wander;
their gathering, O son of Pṛthā, results only in mere weariness.
140.11
Whatever fruit is attained by bathing and giving gifts on the earth up to the ocean,
that fruit one obtains by bathing at Nandāhrada, O king.
