204.1

The venerable Mārkaṇḍeya said:
One should then go to Bhṛgutīrtha, the supreme king of pilgrimage places,
associated with Brahmā, of great religious merit, destroying all sins.

204.2

At that pilgrimage place in ancient times, for three hundred years,
worship of Śambhu was performed by Brahmā for a certain reason.

204.3

Yudhiṣṭhira said:
For what reason, O tiger among sages, did Brahmā, the grandfather of the worlds,
worship the god of gods, Maheśvara, with great devotion?

204.4

He is the one to be worshipped by all beings, the maintainer of the universe, the teacher of the world.
I wish to hear what ought to be heard, this supreme and great wonder.

204.5

Having heard the words of the son of Dharma, the lord of sages Mārkaṇḍeya
related that event, an ancient history.

204.6

Mārkaṇḍeya said:
Formerly, wishing to approach his own daughter, the grandfather [Brahmā]
was cursed by the god of gods, who was overcome with anger, O best of men:

204.7

"Your Vedas and your knowledge shall perish, O lotus-seated one!
You will become unworthy of worship for all worlds, without doubt."

204.8

The curse having thus been given, Brahmā, overwhelmed with grief then,
having bathed on the northern bank of the Revā for three hundred years,
propitiated the lord of gods; pleased, Śaṅkara said:

204.9

"You shall become worthy of worship in the world on every auspicious occasion that arrives;
and I will reside here together with the gods and the ancestors."

204.10

The venerable Mārkaṇḍeya said:
From that time on, that pilgrimage place attained fame from the grandfather [Brahmā];
removing all sins, meritorious, supreme among all pilgrimage places.

204.11

There, in the month of Bhādrapada, especially during the dark fortnight,
he who, having bathed on the new moon, satisfies the ancestors and gods

204.12

by a single offering of rice balls or by sesame-water, O king,
the ancestors are satisfied for twelve years, there is no doubt about this.

204.13

When [the sun] enters Virgo, he who constantly performs the ancestral rites there,
having attained satisfaction, his ancestors leap about and laugh.

204.14

Whatever fruit there is from performing ancestral rites in all ancestral pilgrimage places,
that fruit one obtains on the new moon day there, without doubt.

204.15

A person having bathed at Paitāmaha and worshipping the husband of Pārvatī,
is freed from major sins and minor sins, of this there is no doubt.

204.16

For self-controlled men who die at that pilgrimage place, O king,
there is an irreversible state from the world of Rudra, without doubt.

204.16.p1

|| Thus ends the two hundred and fourth chapter named 'Description of the Glorification of Paitāmahatīrtha' in the Revākhaṇḍa of the fifth Avantīkhaṇḍa in the glorious Skandapurāṇa, an eighty-one-thousand-verse compendium.
