27.1

Glorious Mārkaṇḍeya said: / Having heard the words of Nārada, the queen spoke [these] words: / "Show favor, O best of brāhmaṇas! Accept gifts as you desire—

27.2

Gold, jewels, gems, and various garments. / I shall have that given to you, O best of brāhmaṇas, and whatever else is rare."

27.3

Hearing the queen's words, Nārada spoke [this] sentence: / "Let it be given to others, O good lady, to those twice-born whose livelihood is diminished.

27.4

We, however, are possessed of everything, and are always to be won only by devotion." / Thus addressed, that queen then [summoned] those who had crossed to the end of the Vedas and Vedāṅgas;

27.5

Having summoned the destitute brāhmaṇas, she proceeded to give / Whatever had been declared by Nārada that increases the good fortune of gifts:

27.6

"By this gift may Hari and Śaṅkara always be pleased with me." / Then that queen spoke to Nārada, the best among sages.

27.7

The queen said: / "The gift has been given as told by you, which is entirely devoted to the sake of my husband. / From birth to birth may Bāṇa be my husband, O best of the twice-born!

27.8

For there is no other deity for me, dear sir, except Bāṇa, O best of the twice-born. / By that truth may my husband live for a hundred autumns.

27.9

There is no other religious duty for women, for a husband is indeed [their] deity. / Even so, by your word the gift has been given according to the rules.

27.10

We shall perform our own duty toward our husband, O giver of honor. / Go now, O brahmin sage, and let your blessing be granted."

27.11

Saying "So be it," and taking leave of her, O best of kings, Nārada, / Having carried off the minds of them all, turned his mind elsewhere.

27.12

The brāhmaṇa, being worshipped by sky-farers, vanished from sight. / Then, with their minds estranged from their husband, O descendant of Bharata,

27.13

They became pale and lusterless, utterly deluded by Nārada.

Thus ends the twenty-seventh chapter, named 'The Description of the Agitation of Tripura,' in the glorification of the Narmadā, in the Revākhaṇḍa, in the Avantīkhaṇḍa, in the glorious Skanda Mahāpurāṇa consisting of eighty-one thousand verses.
