40.1

The venerable Mārkaṇḍeya said: / Then one should go, king of kings, to the excellent Karañjeśvara, / where the illustrious demon, renowned in the worlds, attained perfection.

40.2

Yudhiṣṭhira said: / That great ascetic who attained perfection at that pilgrimage place, O illustrious one, / whose son was he, how did he attain perfection, and at what time? Tell me, twice-born one!

40.3

Mārkaṇḍeya said: / Formerly in the Kṛta age, O king, there was a mind-born son of Brahmā, / who knew the true nature of the Vedas and Vedāṅgas, named Marīci by name.

40.4

To him also, a mass of asceticism, in the course of long time, O sinless one, / a mind-born son was born, as it were a second Brahmā directly visible.

40.5

Patience, self-control, compassion, charity, truthfulness, purity, and straightforwardness: / these qualities belonging to Marīci were also present in him, O Bhārata.

40.6

Knowing Kaśyapa, the best of the twice-born, to be filled with such a host of virtues, / Dakṣa Prajāpati gave him his daughters to be his wives:

40.7

Aditi, Diti, and Danu, and likewise ten others, / from whom were born sons and grandsons, O bull of the Bharatas.

40.8

Aditi gave birth to sons led by Indra, / born to that Kaśyapa Prajāpati, O mighty-armed one,

40.9

by whom the three worlds, both immovable and movable, were pervaded. / Likewise, of the other, of Danu, an illustrious son was born,

40.10

endowed with all auspicious characteristics, Karañja by name. / Even as a child, O illustrious one, he performed severe austerities.

40.11

Resorting to the bank of the Narmadā, exceedingly terrible, unsurpassable / Kṛcchra and Cāndrāyaṇa penances for a divine thousand years, O king,

40.12

subsisting on vegetables, roots, and fruits, devoted to bathing and oblations. / Then Mahādeva, accompanied by Umā, was pleased indeed.

40.13

The Lord, the destroyer of Tripura, invited him with a boon: / 'O Karañja of great strength, I am well-pleased with you, O sinless one!

40.14

Choose a boon; I will grant it to you, except for immortality [which belongs only] to me.'

40.15

Karañja said: / 'If you are pleased, O Mahādeva, if a boon is to be given to me, / then let my sons and grandsons be devoted to righteousness.'

40.16

Saying 'So be it', Mahādeva, accompanied then by Umā, / mounted upon his bull together with his gaṇas, vanished right there.

40.17

When the god had disappeared from sight, that Daitya too, filled with joy, / established Mahādeva under his own name and went home.

40.18

From that time forward, that pilgrimage place has been supreme among all pilgrimage places; / by mere bathing there, a man is freed from all sins.

40.19

Whoever, having bathed at that pilgrimage place, offers libations to the ancestors and gods, / obtains without doubt the fruit of the Agniṣṭoma sacrifice.

40.20

Whoever undertakes fasting unto death at that pilgrimage place, O king, / his destination is irreversible; he goes to the world of Rudra.

40.21

Or whoever gives up his life in fire or water, O son of Dharma, / resides in the temple of Śiva for twenty thousand years.

40.22

And when that [merit] is exhausted, he is born into an immaculate family, / knowing the true nature of the Vedas and Vedāṅgas, proficient in all the scriptures,

40.23

either a king or equal to a king, and will live for a hundred autumns, / accompanied by sons and grandsons, free from all diseases.

40.24

Thus everything has been related to you, whatever was asked by you, O sinless one, / the fruit of that pilgrimage place in terms of bathing and gifts, O Bhārata.

40.25

This is meritorious, sin-destroying, auspicious, and destroys bad dreams / for those who read or listen to this excellent glorification of the pilgrimage place.

40.26

He who recites it at an ancestral rite, or reads it devoted to the ancestors, / his religious merit becomes imperishable; thus spoke Śaṅkara.

40.26.p1
