61.1
The venerable Mārkaṇḍeya said: / Then one should go to the supremely holy Śakratīrtha on the southern bank of the Narmadā, / well-renowned, destroying all sins.
61.2
Formerly, severe austerity, hard to be surpassed, was undertaken / right there by Śakra with supreme devotion toward the god Maheśvara.
61.3
Then the god, Umā's lord, pleased [with him], O ruler of men, / granted the sovereignty of the gods, a boon, kingdom, and the slaying of the Dānavas.
61.4
It was obtained by Śakra, O king, through the power of the pilgrimage place on the Narmadā; / hence it became the most meritorious pilgrimage place on the surface of the earth.
61.5
Having fasted with devotion on the thirteenth lunar day of the dark fortnight / of the month of Kārttika, a man is truly freed from all sins.
61.6
From the sins born of bad dreams, from those arising from evil portents,
and from those caused by planetary spirits and śākinīs, he is freed, O son of Pāṇḍu.
61.7
Those who behold Śakreśvara with devotion, O best of kings,
their sin committed throughout life is destroyed; of this there is no doubt.
61.8
Whatever [sin arises] from approaching women who must not be approached, from riding an animal that should not be ridden,
and from harming a master or friend—it is destroyed; of this there is no doubt.
61.9
A gift of an auspicious cow should be made to an eminent brāhmaṇa,
or one should cause a draft ox attractive in all its limbs to be given to him, O king.
61.10
It should be given with supreme devotion by one who desires residence in heaven.
All this has been recounted to you, the fruit of Śakreśvara, O king.
