62.1

The venerable Mārkaṇḍeya said:
Then, O lord of kings, one should go to the excellent Karoḍīśvara,
where, dear friend, the dānavas together with their followers were slain,

62.2

by the gods led by Indra, overjoyed, their minds ever set on victory.
And remembering their ancient enmity towards the sons and grandsons of those [slain demons],

62.3

the dānavas were slain in battle by the enraged hosts of gods.
Taking their heads, all the gods together with Indra,

62.4

cast them into the water of the Narmadā, remembering their kinship.
Having bathed there, all the gods, having established the lord of Umā,

62.5

together with Indra, all worshipped [him] for the welfare of the world.
With delighted minds, all the gods departed for the vault of the sky.

62.6

A full crore of dānavas was destroyed [there], O fortunate one;
from that time forth, that pilgrimage place upon the surface of the earth [became known as] Karoḍī.

62.7

It was renowned then in the world as destroying sin, O son of Pāṇḍu.
On the eighth and fourteenth days in both fortnights, having fasted with devotion,
one should keep a vigil at night before the wielder of the trident,

62.8

engaged in reciting sacred tales and engaged in the study of the Veda.
When the clear morning has arrived, one should worship the lord of the gods.

62.9

Having bathed [the liṅga] with the five nectars, one should smear it with sandalwood paste,
and carefully worship it with commended sprouts and flowers.

62.10

Chanting the Bahurūpa mantra while standing facing the southern quarter,
according to the prescribed rule, he should throw into navel-deep water

62.11

a handful of water with sesame seeds for the spirit of the deceased, standing facing the southern quarter.
Right there, with senses subdued, he should cause a śrāddha to be performed for a vipra.

62.12

With an uneven number of brāhmaṇas intent on the study of the Veda,
having honoured them with cows, gold, betel leaves, and food,

62.13

with ornaments and shoes, O son of Pāṇḍu—
for him it becomes multiplied ten million fold; no hesitation should be made here.

62.14

Whoever abandons his body in that pilgrimage place according to the prescribed rite,
hear what religious merit arises for him, O ruler of men:

62.15

as long as the bones of a mortal remain in the water of the Narmadā,
so long does that righteous soul dwell in the very difficult-to-attain world of Śiva.

62.16

Then, falling from there after a time, having attained human birth here,
he is born a lord of ten million in wealth, glorious, honoured by kings,

62.17

endowed with all righteousness, wise, a son born of good seed,
renowned upon the face of the earth, a long-lived man.

62.18

He remembers that pilgrimage place again; having gone there, O best of kings,
and having worshipped Karoḍeśvara, he attains the highest state.

62.19

The lord of the gods was established by Indra, Candra, Yama, the Rudras,
the Ādityas, the Vasus, and all the Viśvedevas

62.20

on the northern bank of the Revā, wishing for the welfare of the worlds.
Whatever person endowed with devotion causes a temple to be built

62.21

at that pilgrimage place, O best of men, attains an auspicious destination.
With rightfully acquired wealth alone, by means of wood, stones, and bricks,

62.22

whether by a brāhmaṇa, by kṣatriyas, vaiśyas, śūdras, or women, according to ability,
those men too go to the world of Śaṅkara, honoured by the gods.

62.23

He who always hears with devotion this glorification born of the pilgrimage place, O king,
his sin committed within six months shall be destroyed.
