81.1

Śrī Mārkaṇḍeya said:
Then one should go, O great king, to the excellent Varuṇeśvara,
where, O best of kings, the great god Varuṇa attained perfection.

81.2

Having propitiated the Lord of the Mountain's Daughter with oilcake, vegetables, leaves,
and penances such as Kṛcchra and Cāndrāyaṇa, he then attained supreme perfection.

81.3

Having bathed at that pilgrimage place, having gratified the ancestors and deities,
whoever worships Śaṅkara with devotion attains the supreme state.

81.4

A small jar or a pitcher, or a large vessel of water,
together with food, O son of Pṛthā—hear the fruit of religious merit for that.

81.5

The fruit that a mortal obtains from a twelve-year sacrificial session,
that fruit he fully attains; no doubt should be entertained here.

81.6

Of all gifts, the gift of food is declared to be supreme;
water and food give instant pleasure, O best of kings.

81.7

For men of purified minds who have died at that pilgrimage place,
dwelling is in the city of Varuṇa until the universal dissolution.

81.8

Afterward, when that time is completed, he is born in the mortal world;
continually bestowing gifts of food, a man lives for a hundred years.
