82.1
Glorious Mārkaṇḍeya said:
Then one should go, O king, to the unsurpassed Vahnitīrtha,
where the consumer of offerings, endowed with great splendor, attained perfection having performed ascetic penance.
82.2
He who was formerly made an eater of everything in the Daṇḍaka forest by a sage,
having resorted to the bank of the Narmadā, that consumer of offerings became purified.
82.3
Having bathed at that pilgrimage place and worshipped Maheśvara,
whoever enters the fire reaches equality with the fire.
82.4
Having bathed with devotion there, whoever gratifies the ancestors and deities
obtains the fruit of an agniṣṭoma sacrifice, without doubt.
82.5
Immediately after that, O king, is the excellent Kaubera pilgrimage place,
where Kubera, the lord of the yakṣas, was formerly perfected.
82.6
Having bathed at that pilgrimage place and worshipped the teacher of the world
together with Umā with devotion, a man is freed from all sins.
82.7
Having bathed at that pilgrimage place, whoever gives gold to a brahmin
while standing in navel-deep water, receives a hundred million fold fruit.
82.8
Whatever fruit is obtained at Dadhiskanda, Madhuskanda, Nandīśa, the abode of Varuṇa,
and Āgneya, O dear one, having bathed [here] he obtains that fruit.
82.9
They are to be praised in the human world, fortunate, with their desires fulfilled,
by whom the greatly meritorious five pilgrimage places of the Narmadā have been seen.
82.10
They go to the supreme world of Bhāskara that destroys sorrow;
from the world of Bhāskara to the world of the Lord, and from the world of the Lord to the state of non-return.
82.11
He is led to the supreme world for the duration of fourteen Indras;
then, fallen from heaven, the mortal becomes a righteous king.
82.12
Freed from all diseases, he enjoys the moving and unmoving [world];
and Viṣṇu is the deity of those who resort to the pilgrimage places of the Narmadā.
82.13
They are born with unbroken majesty, there is no doubt in this.
The Gaṅgā is meritorious at Kanakhala, the Sarasvatī at Kurukṣetra;
82.14
whether in a village or in a forest, the Narmadā is meritorious everywhere.
One should continually dwell on the bank of the Revā and always drink the water of the Revā.
82.15
He has bathed in all pilgrimage places, [and performs] drinking of soma day after day.
All rivers beginning with the Gaṅgā, the oceans, and the lakes
go to destruction at the end of a kalpa; the Narmadā does not die through that.
