and because all the syllables of the vidyā-mantra are included within it, and with the intention that almost all mantras manifest in this very [vidyā], the word "mother" (mātṛ) is used for her; and also because the name of this deity is Tripurāmbikā. Thus ten mantras have been stated. From their mutual combination, the mantra regular recitation (mantrapārāyaṇa) is formed. Namely: "hrīṃ a kālī sauḥ" — this is the first mantra. In this, among the three seed syllables, the first seed syllable, the first letter among the fourfold mātṛkā beginning with the pure [vowels], the first name among the ten names, and the first mantra among the ten mantras are present. Thus, "hrīṃ ā kālī sauḥ" and so forth, in the pure mātṛkā, there are fifty mantras ending with "hrīṃ kṣa kālī sauḥ". Likewise, "hrīṃ aṃ kālī sauḥ"

and so forth, with the drop (sabindukā), fifty; "hrīṃ aḥ kālī sauḥ" and so forth, with the visarga (savisargā), fifty; "hrīṃ aḥ kālī sauḥ" and so forth, containing the drop inside, fifty; "hrīṃ aḥ kālī sauḥ" and so forth, endowed with drop and visarga, fifty. Thus there are two hundred mantras. Substituting the vāgbhava seed syllable in place of the māyā seed syllable and doing everything else as before, there are two hundred [more]. Then placing the third, the kāmabīja, at the beginning and doing everything else as before, there are two hundred [more]—thus making six hundred mantras. Then putting the name Kalā in place of the name Kālī and doing everything else as before, there are [another] six hundred. Thus, for each name, there are six thousand variations. Then, in place of the first mantra named Śakti,
