> Ah, may you live long, my friend! What is this village whisper
> that goes on for so many days? When singers of sweet voice
> who strike the clear drum tuned with leather straps and tightened with stout thongs
> beg each day, fitting gold caps to their horns and decking them with golden garlands,
> he puts bulls forward with towering, swaying, lovely humps smothered in sandalwood,
> and heaps up abundance of suitable food, pouring out tall chariots along with male elephants—
> like Vēmpi of Mucuṇṭai of curving ornaments and many spears!
> Allowing our fine beauty and youthful grace like his to perish, he bestows no grace—
> he who has crossed the mountain of lofty crags where bamboos vanish,
> where in the shade that tarries in the grove of many flowers
> the Maḻavar wearing strung garlands of peacock feathers
> have felled a heifer and eaten its meat;
> the dry west wind whirling dust across that field of raw meat smell,
> hearing which \[rustling\] like the roar touched off by a fierce tiger of bright stripes
> that has risen desiring prey on the slopes of the long mountain,
> a herd of female deer breaks apart across different branching paths, shrieking and running!
