> Like the whole world shaking, a formidable vessel
> cuts through the waters of the great ocean with reeking waves;
> without resting by night or by day,
> the wind naturally moving at swift speed drives it,
> while at the wide harbour of high banks and dense sand, the helmsman,
> observing the blazing beacon of the light-tower, steers it safely—
> even so, without letting many days pass by,
> our lover who departed for enterprise
> would surely return to banish our wasting sorrow, my friend!—
> if only he has loving ones who would go with the message:
> 'In our town surrounded by water where the cool fields battle the floods,
> touching the petals of the great rich blooms of the pakanṟai in cool bushes
> competing with the karuviḷai flowers,
> while the vine of the bitter gourd with green fruits resembling the rind of jackfruits
> hangs in rows along the ancient leaves of the kūtaḷam,
> the relentless north wind that afflicts without virtue
> blows at night into the upper storey of our guarded mansion,
> such that her fine ornaments slip down, her great beauty fades,
> and the rows of bangles slip over her arms.'
