> Tired of deep sleep in the thicket of long-leaved, tangled vaḷḷai,
> the turtle with sharp claws departs by the rock trailed by creepers
> and fills its gaping mouth in the wide water-ghat;
> with a gait like that of revellers intoxicated with palmyra palm-toddy,
> stirring up the sweet, large wetland, it shrinks
> into the soft leaves of the nearby white water lily, O man of such a town!
> Do not lie; I know your deceit—
> you do not even realise what is held in your own hands! Yesterday,
> savoured as your right the newly arrived fresh floods of the Vaiyai
> with a young woman whose kohl-lined, lovely, painted eyes are captivating;
> though the company of courtesans tried to hide it, it could not be contained;
> the scandal is great indeed; it is greater
> than the uproar in the glorious assembly
> when they questioned the witness regarding the wicked, false oath,
> 'I do not know her,' uttered by the virtueless man
> who stole the fair beauty of the young daughter of lovely forehead
> in the renowned town of Kaḷḷūr with its sugarcane-dense backyards
> and many-flowered fields filled with ancient, sight-worthy fame,
> and, seizing his large kin dense as budding shoots, poured ashes on his head!
