> 'Withered and suffering like a dry field,
> remembering and thinking of him who parted, full of grief,
> can we just briefly endure it?' you say, my friend!
> Without distress and without holding back, eating the scanty grain
> given by patrons as wages,
> like a water-dwelling crocodile yawning,
> their cart of joined rims thatched with spoke-grass
> is not called a home by them; living a harmless life,
> soothing their journey's fatigue at the root of a tree,
> their sweet-sounding, clear kiṇai drum roaring pleasingly,
> wearing on the man's head a thick flower-chaplet
> of clustered erukku blossoms,
> in the light of blazing flames of a brushwood fire,
> a garland of glowing flowers of wild aviram swaying
> upon the woman's rounded breasts of lovely bosom,
> just as a male elephant unites with a dense-striding cow,
> the long and short pipes sounding joined with the muḻavu drum,
> tuned to match the sound of frogs croaking over water
> at the thunder of the rainy sky,
> with small various instruments rattling their fine pebbles,
> dancing as they move from town to town, noisily,
> the dancers with their huge kin, carrying manifold loads
> bound and swung upon poles, when they leave,
> seeing the dusty open ground of the assembly tomorrow
> brings sorrow to this noisy ancient town;
> that very thing causes pain in the evening. Therefore,
> can one forget the love made by our lover,
> even for a short while?
