> She had no thought even for me who gave birth to and reared her, / leaving behind the fine mansion with cloud-reaching ramparts. / Through the difficult, stinking wilderness of hard-to-tread junctions, / where Maḻavar warriors of small bands, wielding long spears with entry-sharp tips / and bells chiming on their legs, / felled the cattle they seized from the frontier upon the gravelly mounds, / and where fierce-shooting warriors living by the bow, / to honor the god residing in the cairns of valiant heroes, / adorned hero-stones with peacock feathers, beat their uḍukkai drums, / and offered grain-fermented toddy and rams as sacrifice— / though she boldly went and became belonging to another, / embracing her excellent beauty with an affectionate heart, / let him ever draw her near and put her to sleep using his chest as a pillow— / he who proved a worthy companion in an unknown land / to my innocent girl with wavy, dark tresses / resembling the fine ripples of the great Peṇṇai river / at the curved forest ghat of Kōval's king, the lord of swift chariots, Kāri of unceasing drums!
