> Thinking, ‘She who loved her parrot, ball, and kaḻaṅku beads
> is no longer as she was in former days
> in her affection, love, tenderness, and nature; let my life end!’,
> like looking upon the back of a fierce-eyed milch cow
> tied to a nearby tree with its young calf on a short tether,
> I approached, stroked her rounded forehead,
> and gently embraced her; and my daughter,
> with sweat rising between the breasts of her goodly bosom,
> embraced me many times! Alas!
> If only I had known that she would cross the forest
> together with the victorious, tall, noble man, praised by many,
> where a weary herd of naive deer, resting in parched shade
> and suffering in grievance against the dry sky, chew withered maral—
> in the guarded wide mansion of her father, abundant in stored food,
> like her own shadow wherever she went,
> joining her playmates in garlands and childhood games,
> with well-formed tinkling anklets sounding,
> wherever she played, I would never have left her side!
