> "Mother, may you live, listen mother! Did you hear anything
> of the sweet-sounding waterfall singing so that the dense kutaḷam blossoms bruised
> in our garden's cool pool? May you live, listen mother! A lightning bolt struck
> like a snake and severed at the trunk the swing tied to a high branch of the aśoka tree
> with lustrous sprouts dyed red in our garden! Did you hear that too?"
> Not knowing that, mother lay sunk in deep sleep; on top of that,
> the hour came when all living creatures slept. Thinking, "If my lover
> comes, this is the season," he did not let the yearning heart of us,
> whose shining, radiant bangles slipped loose, be in vain—
> he has arrived, may you live, my friend!—
> having crossed the chilly, fierce wasteland tract, frightening even by day,
> with wide-mouthed python lairs, where white-tusked elephants, amid the clamor of simple female elephants with small heads,
> plunge and search with loud cries as a swift-whirling torrent sweeps away their calves,
> and unceasing floods rise higher and higher from clouds gathered in flocks in the sky, shedding roaring rain!
