> ‘Even if her fine forehead pales, it is best to traverse
> the hard-to-approach forest to achieve wealth’—
> if you have thought thus, falling behind grace,
> you have thought a very evil thought, long may you live, my heart!
> If you go along the junction of stony paths
> where red-eared vultures perch terrifyingly,
> dragging out the intestines of bold warriors
> fallen in glorious battle with life departed,
> just like the men of the assembly who examine the seal
> and break it to take out the palm-leaf from the cord-bound jar,
> in the ancient, renowned wasteland where the thundering clouds have departed
> and people have abandoned their ancestral homes everywhere—
> then in the deep-dark evening, when the daylight wind shakes
> the spotted shade of the rough-trunked fig tree in the small village,
> her eyes welling with tears will cause painful grief,
> like the sharp-bladed spear raised in fierce battle against unyielding kings
> by the warrior of the Vāṉavaṉ, with a broad hand holding a curved bow,
> Piṭṭaṉ of generous delight and ceaseless liquor!
