> Fearing the yāḷi in the wide wilderness, / the mighty, fierce elephant bull, adorned with spotted forehead, / with mouth-entering rut over which striped bees hum, / embraces with broad, rough, large trunk / so that she finds solace, the heavily pregnant tender cow shivering on the mountain slope, / where, in the courtyard of Kuṟavars drinking sweet pressed liquor, / the chosen blossoms of the thorny bamboo fall, / the long stalks of the broad petals of the kāntaḷ break, / and the cold north wind blows chillingly in the frosty dewy season— / 'In our absence, left alone in our village, / what will become of her? How pitiable is she!'— / having departed from us for a few days, have you ever thought of this, / even a little, O lord of the soaring mountains? / Celebrated across the world, famed for truthful words, / as the renowned poet Kapila contemplated, from afar / gathering the ripe ears of grain from fertile fields, / combining them with wide-stemmed water lilies, / for many years without failure in whatever was desired, / slaying those sent against him, churning the sword battle, / driving away the kings with tusked elephants, / generous Pāri of the fast-galloping steeds— / does not her forehead smell of the sweet, fragrant, fresh blossom / bloomed in his sweet, large, fresh mountain pool?
