> “Your breasts have formed; your thorn-sharp teeth shine;
> your hair has grown fit to be braided; you wear cool leaf garments;
> do not wander everywhere with the unsettled maidens;
> ancient towns of long heritage harbor attacking spirits;
> you must remain under guard; do not step past the entrance;
> you are no longer a foolish child—O wise, young girl!
> You have entered the age of maidenhood!”
> —Because she was told to stay within,
> surpassing the close guard of the bright-lit, noble house,
> fearing that her secret should become known,
> like a deer scented with life among a herd with a sweet-voiced buck,
> stepping forth like a doe that has seen the hunter’s net,
> my daughter has traversed this arid wilderness
> with a youth here who bears a peerless, white spear!
> Meanwhile, just as men run after the tumult
> when desert bandits rustle the cattle pen,
> I could not catch up with their actual persons;
> so here, hear my question to you:
> O daughter of the hunter in the stony, small hamlet,
> who wears a secluded-gem amulet strung with gold and tiger’s teeth,
> whose noble pubic mound is draped with rustling, leafy aśoka,
> and who gathers white, cotton-topped seeds
> shaken down by monkeys feeding on the jackfruit’s choice arils!
