> "Do not sink, pondering many things
> so that your chest with blossoms of breasts is grieved,
> like Viyalūr with its fences of vayalai greens,
> belonging to Nannaṉ Vēṇmān of the hero's anklet and love-filled heart,
> who protects bardic singers together with their women of bending forearms
> who hold slender rods with delicate nodes cut and chosen from the thick bamboo copse,
> seated rejoicing in toddy,
> \[pondering\] every day the cruel man who has crossed the difficult arid wilderness
> where many large-headed vultures together with kites come and alight,
> like men with murderous bows who divide stolen cattle
> and butcher flesh in deep rock clefts,
> having struck down \[defenders\] with loud cries in night raids on hamlets,
> \[feasting on\] the overpowering stench from the decaying carcass left by the tiger reeking of raw meat,
> vanquishing in triumph as dried-up beautiful horns fall
> from the spotted stags of the spurge jungle!"
> —so you tell me, my friend!
> Ah, is it easy to halt the tears of my eyes
> for one who hears the voice of the feeding cuckoo calling
> as smoke-like lovely mist creeps over branches
> lined with fresh flowers thick in clusters
> upon dark-branched mango trees adorned with tremulous tender leaves,
> which rise tall gathered beside arjuna trees adorning the ghat
> on the bank of the broad river with flowing sands shimmering like black silt,
> in the spring season of rare beauty when dew-chilled winter has departed and the kura-tree blossoms?
