> As one wishes to be, so intending should he approach it;
> as one who has a rival, \[so should he approach it\].
> He himself triumphs, and his hating rival is defeated, who knows thus.
> When the Bṛhat and Rathantara were created, creatures and cattle trembled in fear of them.
> Those two looked around at themselves: 'What cruel thing did we possess in ourselves, through fear of which creatures and cattle trembled?'
> They perceived the two finales.
> Depositing them in the forest, they descended to the village.
> That became a self-made barren spot.
> Therefore people say: 'One should not settle upon a self-made barren spot;
> one is liable to become worse off if one settles upon a self-made barren spot.'
> It was burnt up by these two finales of the Bṛhat and the Rathantara.
> Those two, namely the Bṛhat and the Rathantara, are sung in the village without their finales.
> Freely indeed may one chant praise with these two devoid of finales in the village.
