> They said: 'Let us run a race for it.' They ran a race. Agni's chariot was first, then the Dawn's, then the Aśvins'. Those two Aśvins, being horsemen, outdid \[the others\] with horse after horse in horse-speed. The gods said to the two: 'This choice is yours, but let it be shared with us.' Therefore, they chant on \[verses\] addressed to various deities, but it is called simply 'the Āśvina.' They chant first for Agni, then for the Dawn, then for the two Aśvins; for such are their victories. There is one sāman, two meters: thereby one places the two-footed upon four-footed cattle; therefore the two-footed stands over four-footed cattle. Before the sun rises he should conclude \[the recitation\] for him whom he wishes: 'May he be worse off'; he indeed becomes worse off. When dawn has broken he should conclude for him whom he wishes: 'May he be neither nearer nor farther'; he indeed becomes neither nearer nor farther, but Parjanya rains abundantly. When the sun has risen he should conclude for him whom he wishes: 'May he be better off, may he attain brilliance'; he indeed becomes better off, he attains brilliance.
