> Tearing off its caul, they wrap it around the head; the kidneys on the hands, the heart on the heart, the arms on the arms. According to the limbs they distribute the other limbs. Then they cover him with a hide: ‘Unite with your own body!’ Spreading out \[the fuel\], they set \[the fires\] alight. He should desire \[it\] in such a way that the Āhavanīya fire should reach him first. Thereby the world of the gods comes to meet him. Then, as the Anvāhāryapacana \[reaches him\], thereby the world of the fathers comes to meet him. Then, as the Gārhapatya \[reaches him\], he stands firm in this world with offspring and cattle. Smoke shakes the body of him when he is set alight. Because it shakes (dhunoti), therefore it is ‘shaker’ (dhuna). Indeed, ‘Shaker’ is his name. Indirectly they call him ‘smoke’ (dhūma), purely indirectly; for the gods love the indirect. From the smoke he goes to the night, from the night to the day, from the day to the waning half-month, from the waning half-month to the waxing half-month, from the waxing half-month to the month. In that month his body and his life-breath come together. One of the seasons, who is club-handed, descending with a ray, asks him: ‘Who are you, O man?’
