> As for the \[nights\] which he spends in the wilderness, he should spend them right by an udumbara tree.
> When Prajāpati divided nourishment \[and\] food among his creatures, the remnant that was left over became this tree.
> For the udumbara is nourishment, is food.
> The wilderness is food that has gone away from him who gives all.
> Whatever food is here a trace of Prajāpati, he secures precisely that through these \[nights\].
> Now, as for the \[nights\] which he spends neither in the village nor in the wilderness, he should spend them right among the Niṣādas.
> For the Niṣādas are neither in the village nor in the wilderness.
> Through these \[nights\], he approaches both kinds of food: that of the village and that of the wilderness.
> Whatever food is here a trace of Prajāpati, he secures precisely that through these \[nights\].
> Now, as for the \[nights\] which he spends among \[foreign\] people, he should spend them either with a Vaiśya or with a rival.
> For a Vaiśya or a rival is the \[foreign\] person to a Brahmin.
> Food among \[foreign\] people has gone away from him who gives all.
> Whatever food is here a trace of Prajāpati, he secures precisely that through these \[nights\].
> Now, as for the \[nights\] which he spends among his own people, he should spend them right with a king.
> For the king is indeed one's own people.
> And the highest reach of food is prosperity; right at the highest reach of food, in prosperity, he firmly establishes himself at the end.
