> The first day is an Agniṣṭoma, the second an Ukthya, the third has the Ṣoḍaśin, the fourth is an Atirātra. The days have different vital powers, for the distinct vital powers of heroes. Now Takṣaka Bhāgerathi, the king of the Matsyas, used to say: 'The four-day rite encompasses the pṛṣṭhas. A two-day rite is extended with the Bṛhat and Rathantara.' They should use the Vairūpa and the Mahānāmnī verses on the third day; or these are connected to the Rathantara, saying 'The third day belongs to the Rathantara.' They should use the Vairāja and the Revatī verses on the fourth day; or these are connected to the Bṛhat, saying 'The fourth day belongs to the Bṛhat.' 'Thus, indeed, the four-day rite encompasses the pṛṣṭhas,' so he used to say. Regarding this they say: 'Which of the sacrifices is the most expansive? Which is the broadest?' He should say: 'The three-day rite is the most expansive of sacrifices; these worlds are the three-day rite, the directions are the four-day rite.'
