By undertakings indeed the gods excluded the Asuras from the sacrifice. Vamra Vaikhānasa, desiring cattle, performed ascetic penance. He saw this sāman; with it he praised. Having reached this iḷā in the middle, he reached an adhyardhā-iḷā at the end. Cattle are indeed iḷā; the adhyardhā-iḷā is abundance. Thereupon he obtained an abundance of cattle in proper order. So this is a cattle-gaining sāman. He who knows this obtains an abundance of cattle in proper order.
