1.2.1
sa yad om iti so 'gnir vāg iti pṛthivy om iti vāyur vāg ity antarikṣam om ity ādityo vāg iti dyaur om iti prāṇo vāg ity eva vāk /
In that it is 'om', that is Agni; 'vāk', that is the earth; 'om', that is Vāyu; 'vāk', that is the intermediate space; 'om', that is Āditya; 'vāk', that is heaven; 'om', that is breath; 'vāk', that is speech itself.
1.2.2
sa ya evaṃ vidvān udgāyaty om ity evāgnim ādāya pṛthivyām pratiṣṭhāpayaty om ity eva vāyum ādāyāntarikṣe pratiṣṭhāpayaty om ity evādityam ādāya divi pratiṣṭhāpayaty om ity eva prāṇam ādāya vāci pratiṣṭhāpayati /
He who sings the udgītha knowing thus, taking Agni with 'om', establishes him in the earth; taking Vāyu with 'om', establishes him in the intermediate space; taking Āditya with 'om', establishes him in heaven; taking breath with 'om', establishes him in speech.
1.2.3
tad dhaitac chailanā gāyatraṃ gāyanty ovā3c ovā3c ovā3c hum bhā ovā iti /
Now the Śailanas sing this gāyatra thus: 'ovā3c ovā3c ovā3c hum bhā ovā'.
1.2.4
tad u ha tat parāṅ ivānāyuṣyam iva
tad vāyoś cāpāṃ cānu vartma geyam /
Now that is turned away, as it were, not leading to a full lifespan, as it were.
It should be sung following the path of the wind and the waters.
1.2.5
yad vai vāyuḥ parāṅ eva paveta kṣīyeta [sa]
sa purastād vāti sa dakṣiṇatas sa paścāt sa uttaratas sa upariṣṭāt sa sarvā diśo 'nusaṃvāti /
If Vāyu were to blow only straight away, [he] would perish.
He blows from the east, he from the south, he from the west, he from the north, he from above; he blows around in all directions.
1.2.6
tad etad āhur idānīṃ vā ayam ito 'vāsīd athetthād vātīti
sa yad reṣmāṇaṃ janamāno niveṣṭamāno vāti kṣayād eva bibhyat /
Regarding this, they say: 'Just now he was blowing from here; now he blows from there.'
When he blows producing a whirlwind, twisting about, it is out of fear of perishing.
1.2.7
yad u ha vā āpaḥ parācīr eva prasṛtās syanderan kṣīyeraṁs tāḥ
yad aṅkāṁsi kurvāṇā niveṣṭamānā āvartān sṛjamānā yanti kṣayād eva bibhyatīḥ
tad etad vāyoś caivāpāṃ cānu vartma geyam /
prathame 'nuvāke dvitīyaḥ khaṇḍaḥ //
And if the waters were to flow only straight away, they would perish.
When they flow making bends, twisting about, creating whirlpools, it is out of fear of perishing.
Therefore it should be sung following the path of the wind and the waters.
Second khaṇḍa in the first anuvāka.
