1.8.1
prajāpatir vā idaṃ trayeṇa vedenājayad yad asyedaṃ jitaṃ tat /
Prajāpati indeed conquered with the threefold Veda this [world] that is here conquered by him.
1.8.2
sa aikṣatetthaṃ ced vā anye devā anena vedena yakṣyanta imāṃ vāva te jitiṃ jeṣyanti ye 'yam mama /
He considered: 'If other gods sacrifice with this Veda in this manner, they will win this very conquest which is mine.'
1.8.3
hantemaṃ trayaṃ vedam pīḷayānīti /
'Come, let me squeeze this threefold Veda.'
1.8.4
sa imaṃ trayaṃ vedam apīḷayat
tasya pīḷayann ekam evākṣaraṃ nāśaknot pīḷayitum om iti yad etat /
He squeezed this threefold Veda. While squeezing it, one syllable alone he could not squeeze: this one, namely om.
1.8.5
eṣa u ha vāva sarasaḥ
sarasā ha vā evaṃvidas trayī vidyā bhavati /
This indeed is full of essence. Full of essence indeed becomes the threefold knowledge of one who knows thus.
1.8.6
sa imaṃ rasam pīḷayitvāpanidhāyordhvo 'dravat /
Having squeezed this essence [and] put it aside, he ran upward.
1.8.7
taṃ dravantaṃ catvāro devānām anvapaśyann indraś candro rudras samudraḥ
tasmād ete śreṣṭhā devānām
ete hy enam anvapaśyan /
As he was running, four among the gods saw him: Indra, Moon, Rudra, [and] the Ocean. Therefore these are the best of the gods, for they saw him.
1.8.8
sa yo 'yaṃ rasa āsīt tad eva tapo 'bhavat /
This essence which there was, that became austerity (tapas).
1.8.9
ta imaṃ rasaṃ devā anvaikṣanta
te 'bhyapaśyant sa tapo vā abhūd iti /
The gods looked after this essence. They perceived: 'It has become austerity.'
1.8.10
imam u vai trayaṃ vedam marīmṛśitvā tasminn etad evākṣaram apīḷitam avindann om iti yad etat /
Having thoroughly examined this threefold Veda, they found in it this very unsqueezed syllable: this one, namely om.
1.8.11
eṣa u ha vāva sarasaḥ
tenainam prāyuvan
yathā madhunā lājān prayuyād evam /
This indeed is full of essence. With it they mixed it, just as one would mix parched grain with honey.
1.8.12
te 'bhyatapyanta
teṣāṃ tapyamānānām āpyāyata vedaḥ
te 'nena ca tapasāpīnena ca vedena tām u eva jitim ajayan yām prajāpatir ajayat
ta ete sarva eva prajāpatimātrā ayā3m ayā3m iti /
They performed austerity. As they were performing austerity, the Veda swelled. With this austerity and with the swollen Veda, they won that very conquest which Prajāpati had won. All these [gods] were of the same measure as Prajāpati, [saying]: 'This is I! This is I!'
1.8.13
tasmāt tapyamānasya bhūyasī kīrtir bhavati bhūyo yaśaḥ
sa ya etad evaṃ vedaivam evāpīnena vedena yajate
yado yājayaty evam evāpīnena vedena yājayati /
Therefore greater fame comes to one who performs austerity, greater glory. He who knows this thus sacrifices with a swollen Veda in this very way. If he officiates for another, he officiates with a swollen Veda in this very way.
1.8.14
tasya haitasya naiva kā canārtir asti ya evaṃ veda
sa ya evainam upavadati sa ārtim ṛcchati /
dvitīye 'nuvāke prathamaḥ khaṇḍaḥ //
There is no distress whatsoever for him who knows thus. Whosoever reviles him meets with distress.
First khaṇḍa in the second anuvāka.
