2.15.1
eṣa u ha vāva devānām mahāśanatamo yad agniḥ /
This Agni is indeed the greatest eater among the gods.
2.15.2
tan na vratyam adadāno 'śnīyāt
yo vai mahāśane 'naśnaty aśnātīśvāro hainam abhiṣaṅktoḥ
pūtim iva hāśnīyāt /
Therefore, one should not eat without having given him his vow-portion. He who eats while the great eater is not eating, [the fire] is capable of seizing him; he would eat as if it were putrid.
2.15.3
atho ha prokte 'śane brūyāt samintsvāgnim iti
sa yathā prokte 'śane śreyāṁsam pariveṣṭavai brūyāt tādṛk tat /
And when the meal has been announced, he should say: 'Kindle Agni!' That is just as when a meal has been announced, one would tell an elder to serve [food].
2.15.4
etad u ha vāva sāma yad vāk
yo vai cakṣus sāma śrotraṃ sāmety upāste na ha tena karoti /
The sāman is indeed speech. He who worships [thinking]: 'The eye is the sāman, the ear is the sāman,' does not accomplish anything by that.
2.15.5
atha ya ādityas sāma candramās sāmety upāste na haiva tena karoti /
And he who worships [thinking]: 'The sun is the sāman, the moon is the sāman,' does not accomplish anything by that.
2.15.6
atha yo vāk sāmety upāste sa evānuṣṭhyā sāma veda
vācā hi sāmnārtvijyaṃ kriyate /
But he who worships [thinking]: 'Speech is the sāman,' he alone knows the sāman according to its proper order. For by speech the priestly office is performed with the sāman.
2.15.7
sa yo vācas svaro jāyate so 'gnir vāg v eva vāk
tad atraikadhā sāma bhavati /
The tone that arises from speech, that is Agni; but speech is indeed speech. Thus here the sāman becomes one.
2.15.8
sa ya evam etad ekadhā sāma bhavad vedaivaṃ haitad ekadhā sāma bhavatīty ekadheva śreṣṭhas svānām bhavati /
He who knows this sāman as becoming one, that this sāman thus becomes one, becomes singly the best among his own people.
2.15.9
Therefore, one should have the priestly office performed with the sāman only by one who knows thus. He indeed knows the sāman who knows thus. / Third khaṇḍa in the fifth anuvāka. The fifth anuvāka is completed.
