3.10.1
taṃ vāva bhagavas te pitodgātāram amanyateti hovāca
tad u ha prācīnaśālā vidur ya eṣām ayaṃ vṛta udgātāsa
tasmin ha nānuviduḥ /
"Indeed, sir, your father considered him an udgātṛ," he said.
And Prācīnaśāla they know as the one who was their chosen udgātṛ;
concerning that, he did not know.
3.10.2
te hocur anudhāvata kāṇḍviyam iti
taṃ hānusasruḥ
te ha kāṇḍviyam udgātāraṃ cakrire brahmāṇam prācīnaśālim /
They said: "Run after Kāṇḍviya!"
They ran after him.
They made Kāṇḍviya the udgātṛ, and Prācīnaśāli the brahman priest.
3.10.3
taṃ hābhyavekṣyovācaivam eṣa brāhmaṇo moghāya vādāya nāglāyat
sa nāṇu sāmno 'nvicchatīti
ati haivainaṃ tac cakre /
Looking down upon him, he said: "Thus this brāhmaṇa did not tire of idle talk.
He does not seek the fine [truth] of the sāman."
Thus he surpassed him.
3.10.4
sa yad dha vā enam etat pitā yonyāṃ reto bhūtaṃ siñcaty ādityo hainaṃ tad yonyāṃ reto bhūtaṃ siñcati
sa hāsya tatra mṛtyor īśe /
Now, when the father pours him into the womb as semen, Āditya pours him into the womb as semen.
He rules over his death there.
3.10.5
atho yad evainam etat pitā yonyāṃ reto bhūtaṃ siñcati tad dha vāva sa tato 'nusambhavati prāṇaṃ ca
yadā hy eva retas siktam prāṇa āviśaty atha tat sambhavati /
And when the father pours him into the womb as semen, then he is born from that and from breath;
for when breath enters the poured semen, then it comes into being.
3.10.6
atho yad evainam etad dīkṣayanty agnir haivainaṃ tad yonyāṃ reto bhūtaṃ siñcati
sa haivāsya tatra mṛtyor īśe /
And when they consecrate him, Agni indeed pours him into the womb as semen.
He rules over his death there.
3.10.7
atho yām evaitāṃ vaisarjanīyām āhutim adhvaryur juhoti tām eva sa tato 'nusambhavati chandāṁsi caiva /
And whichever vaisarjanīya oblation the adhvaryu offers, he is born from that and from the metres.
3.10.8
atha ya enam etad asmāl lokāt pretaṃ cityām ādadhati candramā haivainaṃ tad yonyāṃ reto bhūtāṃ siñcati
sa u haivāsya tatra mṛtyor īśe /
And when they place him, departed from this world, upon the funeral pyre, the Moon indeed pours him into the womb as semen.
And he rules over his death there.
3.10.9
atho yad evainam etad asmāl lokāt pretaṃ cityām ādadhaty atho yā evaitā avokṣaṇīyā āpas tā eva sa tato 'nusambhavati prāṇam v eva
prāṇo hy āpaḥ /
And when they place him, departed from this world, upon the funeral pyre, and whatever sprinkling waters these are, he is born from them and from breath;
for breath is the waters.
3.10.10
taṃ ha vā evaṃvid udgātā yajamānam om ity etenākṣareṇādityam mṛtyum ativahati vāg ity agniṃ hum iti vāyum bhā iti candramasam /
Such a knowing udgātṛ carries that sacrificer across the death that is Āditya with the syllable 'om', across Agni with 'speech', across Vāyu with 'hum', and across the Moon with 'bhā'.
3.10.11
tān vā etān mṛtyūn sāmnodgātātmānaṃ ca yajamānaṃ cātivahaty om ity etenākṣareṇa prāṇenāmunādityena /
Across these deaths the udgātṛ carries himself and the sacrificer by means of the sāman, by this syllable 'om', by breath, and by that Āditya.
3.10.12
tasyaiṣa śloka
utaiṣāṃ jyeṣṭha uta vā kaniṣṭha utaiṣām putra uta vā pitaiṣām
eko ha devo manasi praviṣṭaḥ pūrvo ha jajñe sa u garbhe 'ntar iti /
Regarding this there is this verse:
"Both their eldest and their youngest, both their son and their father— / the one god entered into the mind; he was born first, and he is within the womb."
3.10.13
tad yad eṣo 'bhyukta imam eva puruṣaṃ yo 'yam āchanno 'ntar om ity etenaivākṣareṇa prāṇenaivāmunaivādityena [ ] /
dvitīye 'nuvāke pañcamaḥ khaṇḍaḥ
dvitīyo 'nuvākas samāptaḥ //
As to what was referred to in verse, it is this very person who is covered within, by this very syllable om, by breath, by that sun.
Fifth khaṇḍa in the second anuvāka.
The second anuvāka is concluded.
