"The bird anointed by the Asura's craft, the wise see with heart and mind; / Within the sea the inspired poets behold; the wise seek the track of the rays."
3.35.2
pataṅgam aktam iti
prāṇo vai pataṅgaḥ
patann iva hy eṣv aṅgeṣv ati ratham udīkṣate
pataṅga ity ācakṣate /
"The bird anointed": breath is indeed the bird. For flying, as it were, through these limbs, it gazes beyond the chariot; therefore they call it the bird.
3.35.3
asurasya māyayeti
mano vā asuram
tad dhy asuṣu ramate
tasyaiṣa māyayāktaḥ /
"By the Asura's craft": the mind indeed is the Asura, for it delights in the vital powers (asu). By its craft this [breath] is anointed.
3.35.4
hṛdā paśyanti manasā vipaścita iti
hṛdaiva hy ete paśyanti yan manasā vipaścitaḥ /
"The wise see with heart and mind": for with the heart alone these see what the wise [perceive] with the mind.
3.35.5
samudre antaḥ kavayo vi cakṣata iti
puruṣo vai samudra evaṃvida u kavayaḥ
ta imām puruṣe 'ntar vācaṃ vicakṣate /
"Within the sea the inspired poets behold": the person indeed is the sea, and those who know thus are the inspired poets. They behold this speech within the person.
3.35.6
marīcīnām padam icchanti vedhasa iti
marīcya iva vā etā devatā yad agnir vāyur ādityaś candramāḥ /
"The wise seek the track of the rays": these deities—namely, Agni, Vāyu, Āditya, and the Moon—are indeed like rays.
3.35.7
na ha vā etāsāṃ devatānām padam asti
padeno ha vai punarmṛtyur anveti /
Indeed there is no track of these deities; and by a track, repeated death pursues.
3.35.8
tad etad ananvitaṃ sāma punarmṛtyunā
ati punarmṛtyum tarati ya evaṃ veda /
ṣaṣṭhe 'nuvāke saptamaḥ khaṇḍaḥ //
This sāman is unpursued by repeated death. He crosses beyond repeated death who knows thus. / Seventh subsection in the sixth anuvāka.
